Chorus is a combination of an interactive musical and a visual novel narrative adventure game. The artists were inspired by Buffy the Vampire Slayer (an episode Once More With Feeling), Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway or Life is Strange adventure. This is the first production of the Australian independent studio Summerfall, which was founded in October 2018 by David Gaider (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age), Liam Esler (Pillars of Eternity, refreshed editions of Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale) and Elie Young. The title was funded by the crowdfunding platform Fig.co. David Gaider is responsible for the script, while Troy Baker is responsible for directing.
The protagonist of the story is a woman named Grace, who has been dubbed by Laura Bailey ( Spider-Man, Gears 5). In her apartment she finds the injured vocalist; just before hes death, a woman reveals that she is a muse and passes on her musical abilities to Grace. This is how the urban fantasy history begins, full of dangers, conspiracies and mythological gods and creatures lurking at every step. The player must clear himself of the charges and escape the punishment of a secret society called the Choir.
The action of the game takes place in the contemporary world full of elements taken from Greek mythology. During our adventure we visit the conference room of the New Olympus, the night club Underworld or the misty halls of the Reliquary, where Minotaur himself resides. Not only does Chorus have a musical character and emphasis on mythical accents, but it is also full of mysteries and incredibles. Strange and twisted characters, whom the screenwriter approached very comprehensively, help to create a specific atmosphere. Despite the quite serious atmosphere, the game is also full of witty dialogues, and you can even romance with selected NPCs.
Chorus is a narrative game, so the game is mainly based on dialogues. However, unlike typical visual novel productions, the special abilities acquired from a deceased musician can be used in conversations with NPCs to manipulate them (e.g. to encourage them to reveal lies) and obtain useful information. It is thanks to music that we give the conversation the right tone. However, the approach to it is dependent on the player and is based on three pillars corresponding to the following characteristics: charm, cunning and hocus-pocus. The choice of dialogue lines looks like in the last games of BioWare and although it is important because it affects the lyrics of the songs, as well as the course of the game itself, it is not necessary to be successful in the conversation. You have to skillfully adapt to the character of the character.
Visual binding consists of illustrated graphics. Throughout the game we observe mainly static backgrounds, and animations during the dialogue scenes have been reduced to a minimum. As we are dealing with a musical, a lot of emphasis has been put on the climatic layer of music. Austin Wintory, an American composer who has been nominated for a Grammy Award for a Journey, is responsible for it.
