Combat Mission: Cold War is the next instalment of the strategy series developed for over two decades by the Battlefront studio. The game takes us to the realities of the Cold War and offers three different story campaigns. The game was published by Slitherine.
Combat Mission: Cold War is set during the crucial period in the Cold War that followed the Vietnam War. Most of the game (two of the three campaigns) takes place in West Germany, around the city of Fulda, and tells the story of a fictional armed conflict between the US and the USSR.
Combat Mission: Cold War is a rather classic strategy game, combining an RTS with a turn-based game. The game allows us to play as in classic real-time strategies or in a hybrid system, where we plan our steps for the next minute of the game, and then the action moves and we can only observe the consequences of our decisions.
The game focuses on realism, which is expressed in faithfully reproduced armament - we control tanks such as M48, M60, M150, TOW, M1 (105), T64 or T80, as well as F-4 Phantom and A-7 Corsair aircraft. The game uses mechanics that simulate the behaviour of soldiers (we have to take into account, among other things, their mental state).
The production also shows a gradual evolution in military technology, allowing players to use new types of weapons (e.g. cluster bombs).
In Combat Mission: Cold War we can play solo or with other players. The core of the game is the single player mode. There are three story campaigns here. Two of them are set in western Germany. In the first, you control US troops in 1979 or 1982 (depending on your choice, you gain access to different weaponry), while in the second, you lead a Soviet army that invades West Germany. The third campaign tells the story of an attack on the US Army National Training Centre in California.
In addition to the campaigns, we also have access to fifteen solo scenarios offering battles on different scales. The multiplayer mode also returns, allowing us to play in hot seat mode or via email.
Combat Mission: Cold War offers a decent, 3D graphic design. The biggest advantage of the graphics is the reliably reproduced armament of the various types of troops.
