An oldschool side-scroll 2D beat 'em up game, created by Empty Clip as extra content for everyone, who purchased Dead Island Definitive Collection including the remastered editions of Dead Island and Dead Island Riptide by Techland. Dead Island Retro Revenge faithfully recreates the classic arcade beat 'em up spirit, popular from the early 90s.
Dead Island Retro Revenge is an oldschool side-scroll 2D beat 'em up game and a spin-off of the popular series of FPP survival horror games, developed since 2011 by Polish studio Techland. Dead Island Retro Revenge was created by Empty Clip, a small studio specializing mostly in converting the other producers' games and developing simple arcade-musical games (such as Symphony or Groovin' Blocks). The game, released for PC, PS4 and XONE, is a part of Dead Island: Definitive Collection, including remastered editions of Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide.
The story takes place in a zombie-infested world, already known from the core Dead Island games. You play as a typical musclehead named Max, who's trying to exact revenge on his cat's kidnappers. Max plough through the streets of California and faces multitudes of various foes, including the mindless undead, corrupt soldiers and degenerate ex-convicts.
Dead Island Retro Revenge is a classic side-scroll beat 'em up game, resembling such productions as Golden Axe or Franko: The Crazy Revenge. During the game, you keep moving right, beating up everyone in your path. Apart from the hits, blows and strikes typical for the genre, you can also use complex combo attacks and collect power-ups, which activate powerful special abilities. There's more—there are weapons and other items you can find on your way and put to good use.
Dead Island Retro Revenge for PC, PS4 and XONE features colourful, although very oldschool 2D visuals, resembling those of the classic 16-bit arcade games and computers. What's more, the game's screen is stylized to resemble that of a pixelated arcade game screen. The overall atmosphere is complemented by a fitting soundtrack.

I’ve already spent several hours playing Dead Island Retro Revenge and plan to continue playing it so that I can improve my worldwide ranking, not to mention that I want to get all trophies the game has to offer. There are thirteen trophies in total (nine Bronze, Three Silver, and one Gold), so you’ll definitely be spending a lot of time with the game if you want to 100%, considering you have to finish the game once to unlock Survivor Mode (an endless mode) and Marathon Mode (where you take on all levels in a single go). It’s been a lot of fun doing this Dead Island Retro Revenge review, and hopefully you have fun as well with the game!
ActionTrip: 5.5 / 10 by Blake "Grundy" Grundman
Some players may find the predictable stage design, repetitive art assets and regurgitated waves of the same dozen character models comforting and even entertaining. However, this was the reason that I got away from the mobile platforms to begin with.

Dead Island: Retro Revenge is a short but good game that is fun if you give it a chance. Though the endless runner format can be limiting, the different strategies and the ability to mix up combos and attacks makes this a more skillful brawler. Enemy variety works, and the game is rather accessible for perfectionists in the realm of score hunting as well as those who just want to button-mash. Even though it's not considered a must-buy, Retro Revenge isn't a bad way to spend an afternoon for $4.99.
