Doom Game Series

FPS series being one of the precursors of the first-person shooter genre. The series was created by id Software studio and has, so to speak, three "fathers" - John Carmack, John Romero and Tom Hall. However, over the years, developers such as Midway Games and Nerve Software have also been involved in its development. Although the series made its debut on PC, over time it was also released on consoles, as well as on mobile devices.

I played Doom: The Dark Ages and appreciate that it won't be a safe sequel

I had a chance to spend a few hours with the upcoming Doom, and after seeing what I've seen, I can say that, with all its pros and cons, The Dark Ages won't be a safe sequel. Like Eternal, it will try hard to stir up the FPS formula. I have my doubts, but Doom Slayer rips boredom as efficiently as he tears demons.

The main pros of the game

  • Engaging Combat Mechanics: Many players enjoyed the combat loop, particularly the introduction of the shield and parry mechanics, which added a new layer to the gameplay.
  • Visuals and Graphics: The game is praised for its stunning graphics and art direction, with many players noting the high-quality design of environments and character models.
  • Level Design: The level design is generally well-received, with a mix of linear and open-world elements that encourage exploration and secret-hunting.
  • Story and Lore: Players appreciated the more developed story compared to previous installments, finding it engaging and atmospheric.
  • Sound Design: While the soundtrack is noted as a step down from previous games, some players still found the audio experience enjoyable.

The main cons of the game

  • Gameplay Pace and Flow: Some players felt that the game is slower and less frenetic than its predecessors, with a combat loop that can become repetitive due to the reliance on parrying and the shield mechanic.
  • Difficulty Level: Several reviews mentioned that the game feels easier compared to DOOM Eternal, with less challenge overall, even on higher difficulties.
  • Lack of Glory Kills: The removal of the glory kill mechanic, which was a signature feature in previous games, disappointed many fans.
  • Dragon and Mech Sections: These gameplay segments were often criticized as being boring and unnecessary, detracting from the overall experience.
  • Price Point: Many players felt that the game is overpriced for what it offers, especially given its shorter campaign length compared to previous titles.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Mick Gordon's Music: The absence of Mick Gordon's iconic soundtrack was a significant point of disappointment for many players, with some feeling that the new music lacked impact and memorability.
  • Multiplayer Mode: Players noted the lack of a multiplayer component, which was present in earlier titles and contributed to replayability.
  • Replay Value: Many felt that the game lacks additional modes or features (like horde mode or arcade mode) that would enhance replayability beyond the campaign.
  • Complex Combat Dynamics: Some users expressed a desire for more weapon variety and tactical opportunities in combat, feeling that the game simplified the experience too much.

Summary

  • Overall, while DOOM: The Dark Ages has its strengths, particularly in visuals and story, many players felt it fell short of the high bar set by its predecessors in terms of gameplay mechanics, difficulty, and replayability.
