Doom Game Series

FPS series being one of the precursors of the first-person shooter genre. The series was created by id Software studio and has, so to speak, three "fathers" - John Carmack, John Romero and Tom Hall. However, over the years, developers such as Midway Games and Nerve Software have also been involved in its development. Although the series made its debut on PC, over time it was also released on consoles, as well as on mobile devices.

I played Doom: The Dark Ages and appreciate that it won't be a safe sequel

I had a chance to spend a few hours with the upcoming Doom, and after seeing what I've seen, I can say that, with all its pros and cons, The Dark Ages won't be a safe sequel. Like Eternal, it will try hard to stir up the FPS formula. I have my doubts, but Doom Slayer rips boredom as efficiently as he tears demons.

Doom: The Dark Ages reinvents and reigns in with equal measure, taking the series in a bold new direction without straying from its captivating roots.

Doom: The Dark Ages may strip away the mobility focus of Doom Eternal, but replaces it with a very weighty and powerful style of play that is different from anything the series has done before, and still immensely satisfying in its own way.

  • Graphics and Visuals: The game is noted for its impressive graphics and art direction, with many players appreciating the dark, gothic aesthetic that fits the DOOM universe.
  • Level Design: The level design is praised for being expansive and allowing exploration, with secrets that encourage players to engage with the environment.
  • Variety of Weapons: Players appreciate the variety of weapons available, which can be used in different ways to tackle enemies, even if some weapons feel more effective than others.
  • Satisfying Experience: Many reviews mention the satisfaction of gameplay, particularly in how the player feels powerful and in control when dispatching enemies.

The main cons of the game

  • Comparative Weakness: Many players feel that the game does not live up to its predecessors, particularly DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal, often citing it as the weakest entry in the modern DOOM trilogy.
  • Pacing Issues: Some reviews mention that the pacing can feel slow, especially compared to the fast-paced nature of previous titles. The reliance on parrying and shield mechanics can disrupt the flow of combat.
  • Lack of Glory Kills: The removal or reduction of glory kills is a significant point of contention, with many players missing the visceral satisfaction that came from those mechanics in earlier games.
  • Boring Minigames: The mech and dragon segments are often criticized as being uninteresting and unnecessary distractions from the core gameplay.
  • Technical Issues: Some players report performance problems, including bugs and crashes, particularly related to ray tracing requirements, making the game feel less optimized than its predecessors.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Mick Gordon's Music: Many players lament the absence of Mick Gordon's iconic soundtracks, feeling that the new music does not capture the same intensity or memorability.
  • Multiplayer Mode: The lack of a multiplayer component is noted, with some players feeling that this limits the game's replayability.
  • Replay Value: Some reviews express disappointment with the game's length and content, suggesting it feels short for the price point and lacks additional modes or challenges that enhance replayability.
  • Dynamic Combat Mechanics: Players miss the dynamic combat mechanics that encouraged constant weapon swapping and varied strategies, which were hallmarks of previous DOOM titles.

Conclusion

  • DOOM: The Dark Ages has its strengths, particularly in combat satisfaction and visual quality, but it also faces significant criticisms regarding pacing, gameplay mechanics, and a perceived lack of depth compared to its predecessors. Players are generally advised to wait for a sale before purchasing due to its current price point and the issues mentioned.
