The Paper Mario series enjoys cult status. Among its imitators is Escape from Ever After, described here, an RPG that is the fruit of cooperation between independent teams Sleepy Castle Studio and Wing-It! Creative. The creation of this item was possible thanks to, among other things, a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.
In Escape from Ever After, we view events from the side. The adventure takes us through the picturesque outdoors, an ice-covered land, the ocean floor or an industrial complex. While wandering through the locations, we get to know the inhabitants and perform tasks for them, look for secrets hidden in them, as well as fight enemies.
Among the latter we will find both variations on the theme of fairy tale characters, such as sinister versions of the three little pigs, as well as other creatures, led by creatures straight out of H.P. Lovecraft's works. Skirmishes take place in turn-based mode, and we derive synchronized attacks using the strengths of our subordinates or their items and badges.
As you progress, companions join the main character. Each is equipped with unique skills and a unique set of strengths and weaknesses, which we develop over time. In addition, along the way we collect decorations that allow us to decorate our office.
In Escape from Ever After we find ourselves in a fairytale universe, which has been taken over by Ever After Inc. and turned into a source of valuable resources and cheap labor. When adventurer Flynt Buckler arrives at Tinder's dragon castle with the intention of defeating it, he discovers that the fortress has been transformed into the new headquarters of the greedy corporation. The protagonist has no choice but to team up with his former enemy to climb the ranks and destroy their common enemy from within.
The graphic design of Escape from Ever After is kept in a cartoonish style straight out of Paper Mario, led by character sprites that look like moving stickers. The game takes place to the accompaniment of a jazz soundtrack.

Escape from Ever After is colorful, traditional, and provides surprisingly interesting commentary on the power of stories. Flynt isn’t the most interesting protagonist, but he has cool companions, and his story of battling a corporation is relatable. The combat system and the presentation are both heavily inspired by Paper Mario.

Escape from Ever After is a great game, and considering how people took to last year’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, part of me wonders if this Paper Mario-inspired game will have the same effect. It’s really wonderful to see a two-person team like this fund a successful Kickstarter, who probably played games like Paper Mario when they were younger to understand how to deliver such a strong, reminiscent game, and I look forward to what Sleepy Castle Studio has planned next.

Escape from Ever After is truly a delightful game, and a worthy successor to the Paper Mario franchise, at least until Nintendo hopefully brings the series back to its original RPG roots. While I had complaints with aspects of the game, mostly in the writing, the general soul of Paper Mario remained intact, and it was great playing what felt like a new entry in that iconic series. I hope the game is successful and that this is the start of its own franchise, as I think Escape from Ever After has laid a solid foundation to forge its own unique identity and legacy. With a greater focus on different storybooks and fairy tales, a potential sequel is set up for a home run. Even if this ends up being a one off game, I definitely recommend it.
