Founded in 1996, the Black Isle Studios team went down in gold in video game history primarily for the first two Fallout RPGs. After the release of the second part of the series, developers from California, including designer Chris Avellone, set out to create Fallout 3, but due to the snail's pace of development, the project was quickly buried.
A few years later, Josh Sawyer and his team made a second attempt to prepare a sequel to Fallout 2, which gave rise to a project code-named Van Buren (after the 8th President of the United States, Martin Van Buren). Eventually, through the financial problems of the studio's parent company, Interplay Entertainment, this venture r? also was canceled in 2003.
Van Buren's Fallout was to not only draw on the legacy of its predecessors, but r? also introduce a number of novelties. The action would once again be viewed in isometric view, but this time the gameplay would take place in a three-dimensional environment. In the course of it , we would take on the role of a human, a ghoul or a supermutant, and the decision we made at the outset would affect how NPCs would relate to us, as well as what missions and skills would be available.
The adventure would take us through the Southwest of the United States, with areas of Arizona, Colorado, Nevada and Utah waiting to be visited, led by locations like Denver and the Grand Canyon. It would be driven by quests and choices (made both by us and by NPCs, including our companions) that determine the course of the story and its conclusion.
The developers planned to "enliven" the combat, so it would be a peculiar mix of classic turn-based and real-time modes. The game would also include a fast-travel option, although it would require repairing the railroad at particular sections.
Van Buren's Fallout would take us to the year 2253, where we would play as a prisoner (depending on our choice of "sitting for innocence" or the opposite) who, after a successful escape, would have to hide from a pursuit led by robotic prison guards. Matters would be complicated by the fact that mad scientist Victor Presper would make him the pillar of his plot, according to which, after he found the other fugitives, they would become the vector that would enable the virus to spread and "clean up" the wilderness. How the prisoner's further fate would unfold would depend on our actions.
Although Fallout Van Buren did not live to see release, years later some of the ideas developed for this project made their way into the cult Fallout: New Vegas. Over time, things were taken into their own hands by fans, who used the demo that leaked online, as well as 700 pages of design documentation, to recreate the project. One such pr?b is Fallout: The New West, a modification to the aforementioned work of Obsidian Entertainment.
