F.E.A.R. is a first-person shooter designed by creators of Shogo: Mobile Armor Division, The Matrix Online and the No One Lives Forever series. All members of the squad go through conventional training (shooting, melee combat, etc.), but are also trained in paranormal skills (e.g. superhuman speed, which works like the bullet-time in The Matrix movies).

The main pros of the game

  • Exceptional AI: Users consistently praise the enemy AI, noting its unmatched behavior and tactics, such as flanking, taking cover, and coordinating attacks, which create dynamic and engaging combat experiences.
  • Atmosphere and Horror Elements: The game effectively blends horror and action, with a well-implemented spooky atmosphere that keeps players on edge without relying excessively on cheap jump scares. The character Alma Wade is particularly noted for her unsettling presence.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: The combat mechanics, including the use of "reflex time" (slow-motion), are well-received. Many players find the gunplay satisfying, and the variety of weapons available adds depth to gameplay.
  • Visual and Sound Design: The graphics, while dated, still hold up well, particularly in terms of environmental design and lighting. The sound design enhances immersion and horror, with effective audio cues that alert players to enemy movements and Alma’s appearances.
  • Engaging Story: The narrative, while fragmented, is generally considered interesting and evolves in unexpected ways, particularly through the expansions.

The main cons of the game

  • Technical Issues: Many users report significant frame rate drops and performance issues, especially on modern hardware. This often necessitates downloading patches or making adjustments to settings, which can be frustrating.
  • Clunky Mechanics: Some players find aspects of the gameplay, particularly the gunplay, to feel outdated or lacking weight. Certain levels and combat scenarios are described as tedious or poorly designed.
  • Narrative Execution: While the story is intriguing, some users feel it could benefit from better cohesion and development, as it is often delivered through fragmented recordings and lacks strong character development for side characters.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Optimization for Modern Hardware: Players express a desire for better optimization, particularly for high resolutions and frame rates, as the game struggles to run smoothly on current systems without extensive patches.
  • Expanded Storytelling: There is a call for a more fleshed-out narrative, with some users wishing for a more concrete storyline and character development, particularly for secondary characters.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Users suggest that the game could benefit from additional modern features, such as controller support, better UI scaling for high resolutions, and more intuitive gameplay mechanics to enhance the overall experience.

Summary

  • Overall, while F.E.A.R. is celebrated as a classic and remains highly regarded for its innovative gameplay and atmosphere, technical shortcomings and narrative execution are notable areas for improvement.
