I can add Hell is Us to the list of games that took me by surprise. I was expecting another overhyped mediocrity with unfulfilled promises. What I got was the complete opposite of my expectations.

The main pros of the game

  • Atmosphere and World-Building: The game excels in creating a haunting and immersive atmosphere, with detailed environments that evoke a strong sense of place and history. The lore is rich, and the storytelling through exploration and environmental clues is engaging.
  • Exploration and Puzzle Design: Players appreciate the focus on exploration and solving puzzles without hand-holding. The lack of maps or quest markers encourages players to pay attention to their surroundings and engage with the narrative deeply.
  • Visuals and Sound Design: The graphics are praised for their quality, especially given the game's AA status, and the soundtrack enhances the overall atmosphere.
  • Narrative Depth: The story addresses heavy themes related to war and human nature, providing a narrative that resonates with players and encourages them to think critically about the events unfolding in the game.

The main cons of the game

  • Combat Mechanics: The combat is often described as simplistic and repetitive, with limited enemy variety and no significant boss battles, leading to a lack of excitement in encounters.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: Many players noted that the game can become tedious due to backtracking and the need to revisit areas for key items or clues, which can detract from the overall experience.
  • Character Development: Some reviews mention that the characters lack depth, and the writing can sometimes feel forced or lacking subtlety, which detracts from the immersion.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Enemy Variety: Players expressed a desire for more diverse enemy types to keep combat fresh and engaging throughout the game.
  • Boss Fights: The absence of significant boss encounters was a common complaint, with many players feeling that well-designed bosses could have elevated the combat experience.
  • Quality of Life Features: Suggestions for improvements include the addition of a fast travel system, a more intuitive inventory management system, and the ability to take notes or photos in-game to help with puzzle-solving and exploration.

Summary

  • Overall, "Hell is Us" is recommended for players who enjoy atmospheric storytelling and exploration, but it may not appeal to those seeking deep combat mechanics or a high level of enemy variety.
