Cubed3: 7 / 10 by Justin Prinsloo

Hell Is Us takes some welcome risks by refusing to resort to handholding in its mechanics, and is made all the more enjoyable for the trust it puts in its players. This brave design choice — alongside an exceptionally crafted and well-realised setting — more than warrants a visit for players looking for an immersive, lovingly crafted adventure through a bleak but compelling world. An enigmatic story and compellingly written characters round out the pros, but disappointingly shallow combat, a lack of enemy variety and an uneven final act ultimately let it down. Regardless, Hell Is Us is a labour of love, and the passion that’s gone into its creation shines through despite its weaknesses.

Game Informer: 8.2 / 10 by Marcus Stewart

Hell is Us feels like a modernized spin on the classic action/adventure game that, as a third-person game, feels obligated to include combat. The game’s investigation elements are much more fleshed out in comparison to the action, which is, at least, passable enough to endure while I enjoy the main treat of running around and solving puzzles. I’ll be deciphering the game’s remaining riddles well after I rolled credits, and I can’t wait to see what revelations await. Hell is Us isn’t perfect, but it’s a bold and respectable debut that largely delivers on its promise, laying a strong foundation for future stories in its fascinating world.

The main pros of the game

  • Atmosphere and World Design: The game excels in creating a captivating and immersive environment that combines beautiful landscapes with dark themes, effectively reflecting the contrast between natural beauty and human brutality.
  • Engaging Story and Lore: The narrative is well-written, tackling heavy themes such as war, trauma, and the human condition. Players are encouraged to piece together the story through exploration and dialogue, enhancing immersion.
  • Puzzle-Driven Gameplay: The game requires players to solve complex puzzles without hand-holding, promoting critical thinking and engagement with the environment.
  • Unique Exploration Mechanics: The absence of a map and quest markers encourages organic exploration and attention to detail, making every discovery feel rewarding.
  • Visual and Sound Design: The graphics and sound design are praised for their quality, contributing significantly to the game's overall atmosphere.

The main cons of the game

  • Combat Limitations: The combat system is often described as repetitive and lacking depth, with limited enemy variety (around 5 types) and few engaging boss encounters. Many players found combat to be a weak point.
  • Backtracking and Navigation Issues: The necessity for frequent backtracking can be tedious, especially without a map. Some players found this aspect frustrating, as it can lead to prolonged gameplay without clear rewards.
  • Abrupt Ending: The game concludes rather suddenly, leaving many questions unanswered and disappointing some players who expected a more conclusive ending.
  • Inventory Management: Some players expressed frustration with the organization of clues and items, finding it cumbersome to track necessary information.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Improved Combat Variety: Players desired more enemy types and deeper combat mechanics to enhance the gameplay experience.
  • Quality of Life Features: Suggestions included a map that fills in as players explore, the ability to take photos with the drone for notes, and a better system for managing clues and inventory.
  • More Boss Encounters: Many players felt the game would benefit from additional boss fights to create more memorable combat experiences.
  • New Game Plus (NG+) Option: A feature allowing players to replay the game with their acquired abilities and items was missed.

Summary

  • Overall, "Hell is Us" is appreciated for its unique storytelling and atmospheric design, but it faces criticism for its combat mechanics and navigation challenges. Players who enjoy deep narratives and exploration may find it particularly rewarding, while those seeking robust combat may want to approach with caution.
