Polish studio Thing Trunk, founded in 2012, has made its mainstay the Return 2 Games series, created by productions referencing classics from the 1990s. One of them was a hybrid of a card game and roguelite titled Hellcard, released in 2024 (released a year earlier as early access). Over time, it received a sequel in the form of Hellcard 2, described here.
In Hellcard II, we view the action in an isometric view. The heart of the gameplay is turn-based duels, for which we lead teams of up to four players. On the battlefield, we primarily use cards linked to specific abilities and melee and ranged attacks.
As in the original, the positioning of units plays an important role here. For example, if several enemies occupy positions close to each other, they can be wounded by an area attack.
A new feature introduced in the production in question is inventory management. The items we equip characters with affect their appearance, as well as modify the deck, providing various reinforcements and expanding the range of possibilities. In addition, you will find character statistics.
Hellcard II can be played as a single player (in which case we control alternately each member of the team) or in cooperative mode over the Internet.
Hellcard II takes us to the fantasy universe created for the Book of Demons and developed in the first Hellcard. Traversing new biomes, we must unravel the mystery of the dragon menace.
A characteristic feature of Hellcard II, as well as of other Return 2 Games projects, is the unusual style of visuals, due to which its various elements look like paper models.
