Herdling is a third-person adventure game in which we take on the role of a guide and caretaker of a herd of Calicorns. Our task is to lead these creatures to the top of the mountain to uncover the secrets hidden there. The development was handled by the Swiss studio Okomotive, the creators of the well-received FAR: Lone Sails.

Gameplay

In Herdling we play as a young shepherdess and we lead and protect a herd of Calicorns - fluffy, horned creatures - through dangerous, mountainous terrains. Together with them, we discover diverse trails, overcoming numerous dangers, to finally climb to the top and discover the secret it conceals.

The gameplay is based on exploration and skillful directing of the herd's movement. Like a true shepherd, we usually follow closely behind the Calicorns, setting the pace of the march and ensuring their safety. In narrow passages, precision and caution are necessary, while in open spaces you can allow animals a moment of freedom. The game world includes fog-shrouded forests, snow-covered plateaus, and forgotten valleys, offering diverse environments full of challenges.

GameOnly: 3.75 / 5 by Przemysław Naglik

Herdling is an example of an artistic work that aims to engage the player with more than just gameplay. It’s a very short title that manages to impress with beautiful scenery, excellent music, and the atmosphere and immersion of the Swiss mountain landscapes. However, strong competition may prevent the game from breaking through to contemporary audiences, who are content with their love for competing title — Journey.

MonsterVine: 5 / 5 by KM Nelson

Herdling tells a poignant tale using simple mechanics, alternating light environmental puzzles with more treacherous gameplay. Some players may find the potential for animal harm in the game upsetting, but the emotional core of its story would ring hollow without adversity.

Console Creatures: 8 / 10 by Bobby Pashalidis

Herdling is more about the journey than it is the destination. A humble game, the premise of herding a fictional animal through tumultuous conditions proves to be an excellent idea.
