An improved version of the old-school, minimalistic strategy game, Kingdom, that was released in 2015 by two independent developers nicknamed noio and Licorice. Similarly as in the original game, in the new title the player assumes the role of a king who travels through the world and uses his wealth to gain new subjects and expand his domain.
Kingdom: New Lands is a minimalistic, side-scrolling 2D strategy with RPG features released on PC, PS4 and etc.. The game is an improved version of Kingdom, a game released in October 2015. Similarly as the original game, the title was created by two independent developers from Netherlands and Iceland who use nicknames noio and Licorice. The game was released for free to all owners of the original version of the game (PC only). The original game, Kingdom, was removed from the stores when Kingdom: New Lands debuted.
In Kingdom: New Lands for PC, PS4 and etc. the player assumes the role of a king who travels through the world on a horse and gains new followers, gradually improving and expanding his realm. The key to gaining the hearts of encountered people is gold. Since it depletes quickly, the player is forced to constantly obtain new pieces of it. While during the day the subjects are working on duties assigned to them, during the night the kingdom is attacked by hordes of enemies who want to get the crown (literally). The king is tasked not only with providing his subjects with work, but with giving them safety as well.
Mechanics of Kingdom: New Lands for PC, PS4 and etc. makes the game an unordinary strategy title in which the action is presented from classic side perspective and one can move only to the left or to the right. At first the gameplay consists of looking for subjects who automatically become builders or hunters and who, for the right price, give what they created or gathered to the player. As the kingdom expands, the players gain access to new types of workers and buildings that generate income. The buildings can be placed in random places, gradually farther and farther away from the main building. Since during the night the kingdom is attacked, one must create proper defense structures like towers and walls in which armies are stationed, ready to repel the invaders.
In comparison to the original version of the game in which the only objective was to expand the kingdom, in Kingdom: New Lands for PC, PS4 and etc. the player is tasked with a slightly more serious task. He must find the wreck of the ship and then reconstruct it in order to sail to the next realm where the whole action starts anew. In addition to that, the game introduces many novelties, majority of which was based on the players’ feedback. There are new and much larger areas to explore, seasons cycle and previously unavailable options, tools and upgrades.
The graphics of Kingdom: New Lands for PC, PS4 and etc. are same as in the original game. The title offers old-school, pixel-based 2D graphics and retro music composed by artist that uses ToyTree nickname. In addition to music known from the original version of the game, New Lands contains nine completely new tracks.

Nintendo Now: 4 / 5 by Aaron Gerrity
You spawn as a randomly generated king or queen inside a wild, untamed wood with nothing more than your crown, your steed and a sack of coins. As you gallop through the side-scrolling forest, you pass a stone structure which spells out “Kingdom.”
GamingTrend: 90 / 100 by Amy Kay Purcell
While the lack of tutorial and clearly defined goals can potentially lead to frustration and some difficult first starts, Kingdom's simple controls lead you right into an incredibly engrossing game. The gorgeous pixel graphics shine on the Switch's screen, and the changing of day to night, and summer to fall is not only visually stunning, it's an ever present reminder that winter is coming. Based upon the principle that nothing lasts, with each new game Kingdom asks: How long can your crown survive?
Destructoid: 6 / 10 by Darren Nakamura
The strength of Kingdom is in its trial-and-error learning.
