A sandbox platform game by indie studio Re-Logic, sometimes called the 2D version of the popular Minecraft. There is no set goal; your task is basically to shape the randomly-generated world around you. At first you only have a few basic tools, which allow you to dig and find resources, chop wood, and create simple structures.
Terraria is a 2D platformer, in which the players can freely modify the world around them. This game from the indie developer Re-Logic is sometimes referred to as "2D Minecraft" since it lets you influence your environment in a similar manner.
The game sends us to a 2D land, giving us a few basic tools to begin with. From that moment on, we have only ourselves and our ingenuity to rely upon. We can dig in the ground, searching for resources, plant vegetation, discover new locations, fight various enemies, create objects and even build our own strongholds and houses. Impressive magnitude of possibilities and dangers makes each playthrough a different experience, because the world is created by the player.
The world of Terraria is randomly generated – players will never visit the exact same location twice. Almost all elements of the environment are fully destructible and removable – it's a way for us to gather the materials needed to build things, and also how we shape the landscape. While travelling the world, we have to remember to protect ourselves from numerous enemies. The same goes for the weapons – we craft our weapons ourselves, and we have many options to choose from. We can use swords, rifles, grenades and dozens of other imaginative gadgets to defeat goblins, flying eyeballs or other wicked creatures.
Players can visit the distinctive world of Terraria solo or together with friends. By inviting other people to our game, we can gain allies to help us in combat and we get more hands to help build our strongholds or whatever other things we'd like.

Terraria is as enriching and fun as ever on the Switch.

For a small-looking game with only two dimensions, it sure has a lot of depth
Pure Nintendo: 7 / 10 by Kirk Hiner
That Terraria continues to receive ports to new systems is a testament to the game's playability. It continues to attract new fans while prompting long-time players to double- and even triple-dip. I don't think you need the Switch version if you're already set up on your other gaming system(s) of preference (especially at the current price). If the Switch is your only option, however, it's good enough for us to offer a recommendation. Let's just hope the developers manage to dig up and build couch co-op before night falls again.
The main pros of the game
- Endless Creativity and Exploration: Players appreciate the vast sandbox environment that allows for limitless creativity in building and exploration. The variety of biomes, items, and crafting options keeps the gameplay fresh.
- Challenging Boss Fights: The game features numerous bosses that provide a satisfying challenge, requiring skill and strategy to defeat.
- Deep Progression System: The progression from basic tools to powerful weapons and abilities is highly rewarding, keeping players engaged for long periods.
- Strong Community and Modding Support: The community is active, providing resources, memes, and mods (via tModLoader) that enhance the game experience and add new content.
- Replayability: The game is noted for its high replayability, with players often returning for new adventures or to try different builds and classes.
The main cons of the game
- Steep Learning Curve: New players often find the initial hours confusing, with little guidance on how to progress or utilize game mechanics effectively. Many recommend using external resources like wikis or tutorials.
- Inventory Management: Players find managing inventory to be cumbersome, often likening it to a full-time job.
- Frustrating Elements: Certain enemies (like bats) and specific game mechanics can lead to frustration, particularly for beginners.
The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users
- Better Onboarding/Tutorial: Users express a desire for more handholding or tutorial elements at the beginning to help new players acclimate to the game’s mechanics.
- Quality of Life Improvements: Suggestions include enhancements to inventory management and perhaps adjustments to enemy behaviors that can be overly punishing.
- Expanded NPC Interactions: Some players wish for more depth in NPC interactions or additional features related to them, as they feel underutilized in the gameplay.
Summary
- Overall, Terraria is celebrated for its depth, creativity, and replayability, with a dedicated community that continues to support and expand the game through mods and shared experiences. However, it also presents challenges for new players that could be addressed to improve the onboarding experience.
