Nordhold is a combination of a turn-based city builder strategy and a tower defense game, set in a fantasy world inspired by Nordic countries of the medieval era. The production was handled by StunForge, an independent two-person studio from Germany.

Gameplay

Nordhold throws us into a procedurally generated world, where our task is to build a Nordic settlement and ensure its defense. The gameplay is divided into two phases. The economic aspect involves the development of the village, which includes constructing buildings (20 different to choose from), managing resources, and trading. The market is not open every round and is subject to price changes due to inflation. We conduct research through the university.

A somewhat separate hexagonal map leads to our village. On it, in the defense phase, we have to repel the attacks of opponents using diversified towers and a chosen general. We also take advantage of bonuses offered by selectable banners, unique hero traits, and acquired upgrades, the number of which in Nordhold exceeds one hundred. The waves of aggressors are gradually gaining strength, but successful protection is rewarded.

  • Replayability: The roguelite mechanics and randomly generated maps create a sense of variability, encouraging players to experiment with different strategies.

The main cons of the game

  • Balancing Issues: A significant number of reviews highlight poor balance, especially in the late game, where certain towers become ineffective against increasingly powerful enemies.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: After a certain point, players report that the gameplay becomes monotonous, as effective strategies tend to converge on a few optimal builds.
  • Heavy RNG Dependence: The game’s reliance on random number generation for tower effectiveness, enemy paths, and rewards can lead to frustrating experiences, particularly when players feel they have no control over their outcomes.
  • Grindiness: Many users express that the game requires excessive grinding to unlock meaningful upgrades, which can detract from the overall enjoyment.
  • Lack of Information: Players have noted that the game does not adequately explain mechanics or provide sufficient guidance, leading to confusion and frustration.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Better Tower Diversity: Users desire more viable tower options and balanced upgrade paths to encourage experimentation rather than sticking to a few meta builds.
  • Improved Documentation: A clearer explanation of game mechanics, tower interactions, and enemy abilities would enhance the player experience.
  • Scaling and Difficulty Adjustments: Many players suggest that the difficulty curve needs rebalancing, particularly in the late game, to avoid sudden spikes that can lead to player frustration.
  • Enhanced Replayability: Suggestions include more varied maps and scenarios to keep gameplay fresh beyond the initial runs.
  • User Interface Improvements: Some reviews mention that the UI could be more user-friendly, particularly regarding text and button sizes for better accessibility.

Summary

  • Overall, while "Nordhold" has a solid foundation and offers engaging mechanics, it faces significant challenges with balance, repetitiveness, and the reliance on RNG, which could be addressed in future updates to enhance player satisfaction and longevity.
