Octopath Traveler is a series of jRPGs, which stands out among most representatives of the genre with its graphic design realized in "HD-2D" technique and so-called "Path Actions". This first one combines pixel art straight from the 16-bit era with a three-dimensional environment and modern visual effects (led by lighting), while the latter allows for various interactions with NPCs, based on the specialization and skills of the controlled character.

Octopath Traveler 0 is the third title under this brand, resulting from the collaboration between Square Enix and Dokidoki Groove Works studio.

Gameplay

Octopath Traveler 0 takes us to the fantasy continent of Orsterra, known from the original Octopath Traveler. We take on the character who, after their hometown Wishvale falls victim to an invasion and is destroyed, must choose whether to embark on a path of revenge, or attempt to rebuild the settlement.

GamingBolt: 7 / 10 by Ravi Sinha

Rather than reinvent the wheel that its predecessors spun, Octopath Traveler 0 adapts the mobile-only Champions of the Continent into a full-fledged RPG with lots to do.

IGN: 9 / 10 by Michael Higham

Octopath Traveler 0 asks you to stick with a 100-hour journey, and it rewards you with the kinds of moments only lengthy RPGs can pull off with its overarching story, an intricate turn-based combat system, and a soundtrack that'll leave you absolutely floored.

Forbes: 8 / 10 by Ollie Barder

Overall, Octopath Traveler 0 is a worthy prequel to the first two games, and the new town-building setup is an engaging addition to an already very solid role-playing game.

User Reviews Summary generated by AI

The main pros of the game

  • Rich Story Content: Many users appreciate the overall narrative and character arcs, noting that the story is engaging and has emotional depth, especially in later chapters.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: The introduction of multi-character combat (up to eight characters) adds tactical depth and variety to battles. Players enjoy the ability to customize skills and build diverse teams.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: The game is seen as offering good value for the price, especially given the amount of content available.
  • Convenient Systems: Features like mini-maps, the ability to track quests easily, and the inclusion of various quality-of-life improvements enhance the gaming experience.
  • Art and Music: The game retains the appealing HD-2D art style and features a soundtrack that many players enjoy, even if some tracks are reused from previous installments.

The main cons of the game

  • Audio Quality Issues: A significant number of players report problems with audio compression, particularly with voice acting, which detracts from immersion.
  • Character Development: Many users feel that the characters are less memorable and lack depth compared to those in previous games. The silent protagonist and the sheer number of characters dilute the emotional impact of the story.
  • Predictable and Weak Villains: Critics point out that the antagonists are often cartoonish and lack complexity, making the story feel generic and uninspired.
  • Pacing Issues: Some players find the pacing slow, especially in the early chapters, and believe that significant story elements could be better developed.
  • Town Building Mechanics: While some players appreciate the town-building aspect, others feel it lacks depth and is not as engaging as it could be.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Translation Options: Many players express disappointment over the lack of translations in languages other than English, which limits accessibility.
  • Character Interactions: Users miss the depth of character interactions and personal stories that were a hallmark of the previous games. The focus on a single protagonist and the lack of meaningful dialogue choices detracts from the experience.
  • Advanced Class Systems: Some players wish for the return of advanced classes or more complex character customization options, which were present in earlier titles.
  • Engaging Side Quests: There are complaints about side quests feeling less meaningful and more formulaic compared to the previous games.

Conclusion

  • In conclusion, while *OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0* has several strengths, particularly in gameplay mechanics and story potential, it also faces notable criticisms, especially regarding audio quality, character development, and pacing. Many players suggest waiting for patches to address these issues before fully committing to the game.
