Octopath Traveler is a series of jRPGs, which stands out among most representatives of the genre with its graphic design realized in "HD-2D" technique and so-called "Path Actions". This first one combines pixel art straight from the 16-bit era with a three-dimensional environment and modern visual effects (led by lighting), while the latter allows for various interactions with NPCs, based on the specialization and skills of the controlled character.

Octopath Traveler 0 is the third title under this brand, resulting from the collaboration between Square Enix and Dokidoki Groove Works studio.

Gameplay

Octopath Traveler 0 takes us to the fantasy continent of Orsterra, known from the original Octopath Traveler. We take on the character who, after their hometown Wishvale falls victim to an invasion and is destroyed, must choose whether to embark on a path of revenge, or attempt to rebuild the settlement.

Push Square: 7 / 10 by Liam Croft

Octopath Traveler 0 is a perfectly solid instalment in the Square Enix franchise, though its overwhelming familiarity will make large parts of it feel like a retread. Its town-building mechanic and expanded party system are smart expansions, and the move towards a single, centralised story is a benefit. However, Octopath Traveler 0 will still feel largely the same in an experience below that of its predecessors.

Rectify Gaming: 8 / 10

This isn't a perfect entry point to the series. If you've never played an Octopath game before, start with the second one. But if you've already experienced both previous entries and want more of this specific flavor of JRPG, Octopath Traveler 0 offers enough new ideas and refined systems. Square Enix's effort to transform a mobile gacha game into a legitimate console RPG is impressive.

Entertainment Geekly: 4 / 5 by Luis Alvaro

Octopath Traveler 0 is a designers’ JRPG, fixated on systems that constantly open new doors. It stumbles with uneven pacing and a few lukewarm side characters, but as a strategy playground it is exciting and rewarding.
