The third installment of the jRPG series from Square Enix, started in 2018. Octopath Traveler 0 offers a unique Path Actions system and features "HD-2D" graphics style. This time we can create our own character and there's also a new mechanic which involves rebuilding a destroyed city.
Octopath Traveler is a series of jRPGs, which stands out among most representatives of the genre with its graphic design realized in "HD-2D" technique and so-called "Path Actions". This first one combines pixel art straight from the 16-bit era with a three-dimensional environment and modern visual effects (led by lighting), while the latter allows for various interactions with NPCs, based on the specialization and skills of the controlled character.
Octopath Traveler 0 is the third title under this brand, resulting from the collaboration between Square Enix and Dokidoki Groove Works studio.
Octopath Traveler 0 takes us to the fantasy continent of Orsterra, known from the original Octopath Traveler. We take on the character who, after their hometown Wishvale falls victim to an invasion and is destroyed, must choose whether to embark on a path of revenge, or attempt to rebuild the settlement.
For the first time in the series' history, the gameplay begins with creating a character, and therefore - deciding on its appearance, voice, skills, or even culinary preferences. We have nothing left to do but to plunge into the whirl of adventures, during which we watch the action from a bird's eye view.
We explore Orsterra, we get to know its inhabitants, engage in conversations with them and make choices that affect the further course of the story. We also pick up quests and recruit team members from over 30 travelers, diversified in terms of professions and abilities.
Thanks to special actions called "Path Actions", we can acquire items from encountered characters, challenge them to duels, and also invite them to our city.
The second important novelty after character creation are the mechanics of rebuilding the settlement, thanks to which we erect buildings and step by step make the devastated city start to pulse with life again.
And speaking of combat - the battles take place in turn-based mode, and during them we take control of eight characters arranged in two rows on the battlefield. The game allows us to switch between the first and second row of units, and the key to success is primarily the skillful use of the Break & Boost system.
Thanks to this last feature, after reducing the enemy's shield to zero, we can "break" their defense and launch critical attacks. Additionally, after charging the enhancement points (BP) indicator, we can significantly increase the power of our attacks, as well as improve the effectiveness of support and regenerative abilities.

A stellar combat system and multitude of strategic wrinkles are the glue that holds this well-told, if disjointed, episodic story together.

Square Enix's conversion of Champions of the Continent delivers an engaging, if completely different, take on Octopath.

Octopath Traveler 0 is a great game in its broadest strokes, but manages to miss the high benchmark that the rest of the series has set for me. The bones of a mobile game are still very much here, candied with the presentation of a console experience. Despite this, I still largely enjoyed my time with Octopath Traveler 0, and very much want to see more from this now staple franchise.
