Release Date: cancelled
Blizzard Entertainment's survival game which was in development from 2017 and was then cancelled in 2024. Odyssey (code name) was supposed to use inspirations from Minecraft and Rust. The plan was to offer large maps with an open structure, ready to accommodate 100 players at the same time.
The portfolio of Blizzard Entertainment was lacking a representative of the survival game genre back in 2017 and that same genre was gaining popularity at that time. Developers tried to change this by starting work on Odyssey (code name), an enigmatic production that, although it was in development for over six years (under the supervision of Craig Amai, a former World of Warcraft designer), was ultimately cancelled.
Little is known about how the gameplay in Odyssey was supposed to look like. The project drew inspiration from games like Minecraft and Rust. It was supposed to offer us vast maps with an open structure, where 100 people could play at the same time. Based on leaks, speculation, and unofficial news, it also appears that during the game we would participate in events inspired by fairy tales and although the action of the game would take place in a fantasy universe, we would still play as newcomers from our world.
The prototypes of Odyssey were created based on Unreal Engine technology, but it was planned that the final version of the game would use the proprietary Synapse engine. This led to numerous delays, so when Microsoft (the parent company of Blizzard Entertainment) cancelled this project in January 2024, it was far from completion (although it was playable and had undergone initial tests).
