A turn-based strategy game, developed by The Headquarter – a Spanish studio known for Espana 1936. This time, the authors enable us to take part in the Thirty Years’ War, a 17th century conflict between Protestant countries of the Holy Roman Empire, supported by other European nations (e.g. Sweden, Denmark, France, Scotland, or England) and the coalition led by Catholic Habsburg dynasty. 30 Years’ War allows us to join either Protestants or Catholics, and take part in the war for domination over The Old Continent, recreating the crucial moments of the conflict. When it comes to mechanics, we are left with a complex, old-school strategy game, employing a simultaneously-executed turn system, and placing a lot of emphasis on faithful recreation of 17th century Europe and its style of conducting warfare. During the game, our mind is preoccupied not only with warfare, but also with conscripting armies and our country’s economy and diplomacy.

A new installment in a popular series of turn-based games, created as a joint effort of Byzantine Games and The Lords Games. The game takes us to Europe during the age of pike and shot (1494 – 1698), introducing three separate campaigns encompassing 40 historical battles from the Thirty Years’ War, the English Civil War, and the series of conflicts between Austria and Ottoman Empire, including Siege of Vienna. Additionally, the game introduces a “skirmish” mode which creates a fictional campaign taking place on randomly generated maps. The gameplay in Pike and Shot: Campaigns 1494-1698 does not differ much from its predecessor. Players control a chosen nation, engaging in tactical battles requiring a number of strategic decisions which can influence the course of the whole campaign. Victories, as well as defeats contribute to mental state and battle readiness of our soldiers. Aside from a single player mode, the developers introduced a multiplayer module employing PBEM++ system. The game employs high-quality visuals, inspired by battle scenes from that era.

A realistic strategy game, developed by 2BY3 Games, that is set in the times of the World War II. As its subtitle might suggest, Uncommon Valor's action takes place in the South Pacific region. The action of the game is set in the period between 1942-1943, and takes place in Australia, New Guinea, and Solomon Islands, among others. Unlike in other strategy games, the developers of Uncommon Valor focused mainly on the events that had a visible impact on warfare in the South Pacific region. There are eighteen different campaigns available. A part of the game’s scenarios will take the players less than sixty minutes to finish, but some will require many hours of attention. The realism and detailed recreation of the events featured in the game are among its biggest assets. It can be seen in the depiction of the military units, the objects located on the maps, and the typical frontline logistics. Depending on the chosen difficulty level, some of the player's activities can be carried out automatically.

We can take part in three conflicts: Italian Wars, Thirty Years’ War, or the English Civil War. In all, we are given 10 historical battles, in which we control forces the size of a battalion and larger. Each battlefield was recreated using historical sources, while the available units correspond to real banners from that era. The key to success is to employ adequate tactics for each encounter, while the decisions made by the players have an utmost influence over the whole continent. The game offers five difficulty levels and a PBEM multiplayer mode. The visual side was based on the authentic battle scenes from the era.

The game reuses Uncommon Valor engine, which powered the previous game of the studio, but the new installment is much more complicated, expanding available military operations beyond sea battles and including also land and air combat. Similarly to the said predecessor, the game focuses on realism, and pays much attention to small details. Unlike most strategy games, units are not a constant value – the seamen, airmen, or infantrymen all gather experience, and experience fatigue, while each commander has their strong points, as well as weaknesses. War in the Pacific contains 15 diversified campaigns, and remains easy-to-use despite being an unforgiving, complex game.

During the completely new story campaign the player assumes the role of Avik – the successor of the kingdom of Frostlings. He wants to reclaim his realm by using the forbidden powers of necromancy. During the game the protagonist will have to choose between the legacy of his race and using the potential of his newly obtained powers. The expansion introduces the titular Eternal Lords (Necromancers) with their unique abilities and two new races (Tigrans and Frostlings). There are also new locations, items and scenarios. As for the mechanics, the game introduces special random events and a system which enables the player’s kingdom to rate support it has among various races. Previously unavailable play-by-mail multiplayer mode was introduced as well.

Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon - Vulkan's Wrath is the first big expansion to Warhammer: 40,000: Armageddon, a real-time strategy developed by The Lordz Games and Slitherine. This add-on expands the plot of the first game and tells the story of the second war for the planet Armageddon. Three chapters of Space Marines join the battle in its crucial moment. The expansion's story focuses on the Salamanders chapter. The game is divided into ten missions, during which we will use all assets and special abilities of our Space Marines unit while defending the planet's inhabitants from the ferocious Orcs. Vulkan's Wrath does not introduce any technical changes to the game. Just like in the base game, we can play alone or compete with other players in asynchronous multiplayer played through PBEM++.

Strategy, Multiplayer, PBeM, Singleplayer, Turn-based, American Civil War, 19th Century.

A turn-based strategy game developed by Western Civilization Software. As the title suggests, the game focuses on the American Civil War, during which brothers often had to turn against each other when the Confederate States declared war upon the northern states, devastating the United States of America. The action of this game is set at the initial stages of the American Civil War, allowing players to participate in the events such as the First Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Wilson's Creek (1861), the Battle of Mill Springs and the Battle of Williamsburg (1862). Apart from the large campaigns, the game delivers a number of smaller scenarios, including the hypothetical ones presenting an alternative course of events. Battles take place on huge maps covering the area of 50 square miles, divided into 75-yard hexagons. A single turn corresponds to 24 hours in real time. Brother against Brother: The Drawing of the Sword builds on realism – regiments have their unique skills that made them famous during the Civil War. Apart from the units’ stats and player’s tactical decisions, the battle is affected by the amount of supplies, changing weather conditions, and the smoke suspended over the battlefield.

Created by The Aristocrats, an expansion pack for Order of Battle: World War II. Most importantly, Blitzkrieg introduces new units for Germans (Panzer III and IV tanks as well as planes - Bf109, Fw190, and other weapons, such as the 88mm anti-aircraft cannon) and Allies (Matilda and Char B1 tanks, the legendary Spitfire fighter plane, as well as armored trains). Furthermore, the expansion includes a story campaign based on historical events - it comprises 12 scenarios in total. Among the novelties, one will find a system of specializations that for instance, allows the player to familiarize their tank drivers with the Auftragstaktik doctrine or create Waffen SS divisions. Particular units gain experience on the battlefield and can be transferred both between separate scenarios and entire campaigns. Both the visuals and the gameplay formula remain unchanged in the expansion. As a result, the game is still all about turn-based battles taking place on maps filled with hexagons.

DLC for the turn-based strategy game Order of Battle: World War II, developed by Luxemburg-based studio The Aristocrats. The campaign offered in the expansion used to be a part of a full-price game known as Order of Battle: Pacific, however, after that game changed the name to Order of Battle: World War II and switched to free-to-play distribution model, the content is being offered as a paid expansion (free for all who had bought the original game). Similarly to its twin expansion called U.S. Pacific, Rising Sun focuses on the Pacific War between the United States of America and Japan. In this case, however, we can command the Imperial Japanese Army as well as the Imperial Japanese Navy. In the course of a 12-scenario campaign, you take part in some key land and sea battles on the Pacific theater. Complementary to the historical missions there are fictional scenarios focused on Japanese invasion on Australia.
