A remastered version of the detective action jRPG from Atlas studio. Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army allows us to control a young detective, investigating the secrets of the alternative version of Tokyo from the 1930s. The protagonist can capture and use demons, both for combat and exploration.
Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army is an action jRPG with a detective twist. At the same time it is a remastered version of the 2006 project Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner - Raidou Kuzunoha vs the Soulless Army, which was a spin-off of the Shin Megami Tensei series. The remaster was developed by the creators of the original, namely Atlus company.
In Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army, we watch the action from a third-person perspective (TPP).
The core of the game is the investigation conducted by the main character, which throws him into various corners of Edo (the old name for Tokyo). Our character can also move to the Land of Darkness, which is an alternative reality on the edge of the afterlife. While exploring locations, the protagonist gets to know the city's residents, solves puzzles, and performs quests, gradually pushing the story forward.
Raidou is not conducting his investigation alone. The hero can count on the help of his faithful companion - the black cat Gouto, his mentor Narumi, and the journalist Tae Asakura. Important roles in the story are also played by characters such as General Munakata, and Grigori Rasputin, who, like our protagonist, can summon demons.
The protagonist is one of the so-called Devil Summoners, who protect the city from threats from this world and beyond. Given that opponents often stand in his way, combat is one of the main elements of the game. Unlike most other Atlus works, battles take place in real time and emphasize our agility and reflexes.
On the battlefield, the protagonist not only makes use of melee weapons (sword, spear, axe) and firearms, but can also summon various demons for assistance. Creatures from the afterlife have individual sets of skills, as well as strengths and weaknesses. The key to success is relying on the help of spirits capable of exploiting the weaknesses of our enemies. If we mess up and summon the wrong entity, we may even strengthen our opponent. Additionally, the powers of individual creatures can be combined, creating even more powerful hybrids. The power of demons is not infinite - they draw their strength from bioenergy called Magnetite (MAG). We need to replenish it, taking it from enemies.
This is not the end, as devils come in handy at other moments of the game - from exploration to obtaining valuable information (thanks to the ability to read the thoughts of the characters being interrogated). As we progress, we conquer successive demons, which over time increases our capabilities.
Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army takes us to an alternative version of the Japanese capital from the 1930s. The main character of the game is Raidou Kuzunoha XIV, a young assistant to a private detective - Shouhei Narumi. Kaya Daidouji, who comes from a wealthy family, decides to use their services, but she gets kidnapped before she manages to share her problem with the protagonist and his mentor. The girl, however, manages to ask them to... murder her before her sixteenth birthday.
In this way, the intrigue begins, which over time turns out to be of a much larger caliber than it initially seemed. The fate of not only the young heiress, but also the entire city, and even the country, depends on how Raidou handles his mission.
Compared to the original, Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army stands out primarily due to its thoroughly refreshed audio-visual presentation. The developers have expanded the list of demons waiting to be captured. They have also focused on the combat system and adapted it to modern standards, made the areas bigger, and also modernized the interface. The cherry on top of all this is the full dubbing.

ATLUS has outdone itself with RAIDOU Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army. Middling story and wonky camera angles aside, it hits the sweet spot of monster taming and action combat without compromising on the complexities that make JRPGs captivating. Here's to hoping that ATLUS reinvents and reinvigorates the RAIDOU series, as it's a breath of fresh air for this Persona fan!
NextPlay: 9 / 10 by Mario Milos
RAIDOU Remastered takes the original Demon Summoner and gives it a plethora of quality-of-life improvements, creating what I would consider an essentially new experience. While the story is the same, engaging combat and a voiced cast help modernise what could have otherwise been a dated PlayStation 2 title. It’s fun, it’s frantic, and it’s unique. This is not only an ode to RPGs past, but proof that ATLAS can and will deliver on its projects.

Raidou Remastered is one of those games that all Persona fans should pick up without question. There are a few too many niggles that hold it back from being perfect, but for many people this could just be one of the all-time greats, and the perfect game to tide you over as you wait for Persona 4's upcoming remake.
