Song of Horror for PC is an action adventure survival horror game. It was developed by Protocol Games studio.

Story

The protagonist is a man named Daniel Noyer, yet we spend most of the time controlling one of sixteen different characters, connected in some way to Noyer. Among them, are people with different backgrounds and skills, but they are all ordinary people, not warriors. Story is divided into sixteen chapters, during which, step by step we, get to know the truth about the evil tormenting Daniel. Interestingly, during the game death of one of characters does not mean the end of the play – we simply take control over another person, and fail only when all of them die.

The main pros of the game

  • Atmosphere: The game excels in creating a tense and oppressive atmosphere, with excellent sound design that enhances the horror experience. Players often describe it as genuinely scary without relying on cheap jump scares.
  • Unique Mechanics: The permadeath system adds significant tension, as players must be cautious with character actions. Each character has unique attributes and stats, making their deaths impactful to the story.
  • Puzzles: Many players appreciate the puzzle design, which is often clever and integrated into the environment, offering a nostalgic feel reminiscent of classic survival horror games.
  • Storytelling: The overarching narrative, centered around a cursed melody and mysterious entity, is engaging and unfolds across episodes, keeping players invested in the plot.

The main cons of the game

  • Frustrating Mechanics: The permadeath feature can lead to significant frustration, especially when players face instant-death scenarios due to obscure interactions or poorly explained mechanics. Many players find the lack of manual saves punishing.
  • Controls and UI Issues: Players often mention clunky controls, especially in conjunction with fixed camera angles, which can lead to disorientation and difficulty in navigating the environment.
  • Obscure Puzzles: While some puzzles are praised, others are criticized for being overly cryptic or poorly designed, leading to a reliance on guides for progression.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Combat System: Many players expressed a desire for some form of combat, feeling that the lack of it made the gameplay feel incomplete or less engaging. The game relies heavily on stealth and avoidance rather than direct confrontation.
  • Better Guidance for Puzzles: Players suggested that clearer hints or guidance for puzzles would enhance the experience, as some found them too vague or illogical.
  • More Dynamic Gameplay: Some users wished for a more varied gameplay experience, with less reliance on repetitive quick-time events and more active threats or enemies roaming the environment.

Summary

  • Overall, "Song of Horror Complete Edition" is appreciated for its atmospheric storytelling and unique gameplay mechanics, but it also faces criticism for its frustrating elements and design choices that can hinder the overall experience.
