South of Midnight is an action adventure game, drawing heavily from the history and folklore of the deep south of the United States. The game was developed by Compulsion Games studio, in whose portfolio we can find projects such as We Happy Few and Contrast.

Story

The main character of South of Midnight is a woman named Hazel. A category 5 hurricane took away her mother and home, however the protagonist gained supernatural power, thanks to which she became known as the Weaver- a person who can mend broken magical bonds and calm agitated spirits.

Using these abilities, the heroine must uncover the secrets of her family and face many dangerous creatures, thereby gradually repairing the world around her. Hazel is not doomed to a lonely journey, as she can count on the company of a large, talkative catfish.

South of Midnight Review: best music score of the year

South of Midnight is a pure mid-budget game that doesn't even try to challenge the biggest launches of the first half of the year, but has enough character and charm to provide about ten hours of decent fun.

Push Square: 7 / 10 by Liam Croft

Few games this generation will ship with better presentation than South of Midnight in motion, with outstanding visuals, audio, and all the vibes of a Deep South setting. The game itself quickly runs out of ideas, making the act of actually playing it less exciting than you'd like. However, those stunning graphics, soundtrack, and inspirations still manage to carry the title to a mostly satisfying finish line.

The Punished Backlog: 8.6 / 10 by Allison McDaniel

South of Midnight’s plot never felt boring, holding my attention from start to finish. It’s a short experience that only took me eight hours to complete, yet one that I'll remember for much longer. If you have any interest at all in the game, please check it out, especially if you have a Game Pass subscription. It’s a tale unlike most action adventures, and it knows how to tug on your heartstrings.

TrueAchievements: 6 / 10 by Sean Carey

Despite its fantastic visuals, superb voice acting, and a gorgeous, intriguing world filled with character and charm, South of Midnight sadly falls flat. A lack of variety in enemy types and some dull combat make combat encounters tedious and frustrating towards the end, whereas the story, which starts off so promising, ultimately gets lost in the hollers along the way.
