Release Date: December 4, 2025
A spin-off of the popular stealth series, made exclusively for virtual reality headsets. In Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow we play as a female thief named Magpie. Just like Garret from previous games, the protagonist ends up in the gloomy City, working from the shadows and stealing valuables from well-guarded places.
Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow is a spin-off of the cult stealth game series, initiated by Thief: The Dark Project back in 1998. The game was developed by the Maze Theory studio (known for games from the Doctor Who series, namely The Edge of Time, The Lonely Assassins, and The Edge of Reality) under the supervision of the Eidos Montreal team. Its release was handled by Vertigo Games. This project was prepared exclusively with virtual reality headsets in mid.
Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow takes us to the steampunk universe known from the previous parts of the series, specifically - to the City, in whose darkness we once again have to immerse ourselves. The metropolis is ruled with an iron fist by Baron Ulysses Northcrest, who is making himself rich at the expense of the residents, and nipping any signs of opposition in the bud.
This time we do not play as Garrett, but as his colleague in the profession - the female thief Magpie. She was raised on the streets after her parents were killed by the actions of Northcrest. Our protagonist is just trying to make ends meet, but her situation changes dramatically when she stumbles upon a powerful artifact hidden in the city treasury. Thanks to it, Magpie will be able to uncover the darkest secrets of the City and reveal a sinister conspiracy.
In Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow, we view the action from a first-person perspective (FPP). The creators made every effort to implement all the most important elements needed to call this game one of the installments of the Thief brand.
We must stick to the darkness in the game, move slowly and quietly, carefully observe the opponents to learn their patrol routes, and also eliminate them by surprise, trying not to trigger unnecessary alarm. The protagonist has a bow located on her forearm. Aside from standard ammunition, we can also equip it with water and rope arrows. The former allow for extinguishing fire that is a source of light, while the latter enable us to reach hard-to-reach places.
It's worth remembering that Magpie is a thief, not a killer. Sometimes it's better to just sneak behind the back of an unsuspecting adversary, rather than trying to get rid of him. The protagonist's profession also allows her to pick the pockets of enemies and break into hiding places, as well as collect the valuables hidden within them.
The game has been divided into non-linear missions. There are several paths leading to each objective and they are associated with different gameplay styles.

Use a Potion: 6 / 10
Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow has the heart and soul of the series, and when its systems click, it delivers moments that genuinely feel fantastic. But for all of the atmospheric world design, clever virtual reality mechanics, and flashes of brilliance, it’s let down by unstable AI and technical hiccups that too often break immersion and momentum. There’s a solid foundation here (and one that could undoubtedly shine with future fixes) but as it stands, it wavers between thrilling stealth and unavoidable frustration. Fans hungry for a return to the series that is strengthened by virtual reality will certainly find reasons to enjoy it, but anyone hoping for a polished revival may want to temper their expectations for now.
PlayStation Universe: 7.5 / 10 by Ben Fellows
Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow on PSVR2 is modest in ambition but confident in its chosen identity. It doesn't offer the sprawling systemic depth of its ancestors, nor does it push stealth AI into new territory, yet the tactile VR experience elevates what could have been forgettable into something surprisingly satisfying. The repetition, the shallow enemy behaviour, and the occasional technical hiccup undeniably pull the game down, but the undeniable charm of physically inhabiting the shadows pushes it back up. What's left is a VR stealth experience that works because it leans into the strengths of the medium, even if it can't fully escape its weaknesses.
Duuro Magazine: by Krist Duro
Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow is not a bad game. It is an enjoyable, lightweight stealth adventure with good vibes, fun levels, and a clear respect for what makes the Thief fantasy appealing. It is also not essential. It is the definition of a solid seven out of ten experience. Something you play, appreciate for what it is, shrug at the rough parts, and move on.
