Wartales: The Beast Hunt is the fifth expansion to the popular 2023 Wartales game, straddling the border of strategies and RPGs. The creators of the original and all previous expansions are behind the development, namely the independent French studio Shiro Games. This developer is also known for such titles as Northgard and Dune: Spice Wars.

New features in the expansion

Wartales: The Beast Hunt revolves around the titular beast hunt. The add-on takes us to the land of Brigg, whose inhabitants are struggling with a terrifying beast that turns animals into aggressive, ghostly creatures. We become trackers in the game and our task is to find the monster's hideout and hunt it down before things completely get out of control.

  • Scaling for Existing Characters: Many reviews highlighted the need for content that scales appropriately with existing high-level characters, rather than requiring players to start new games to fully enjoy the DLC.
  • Improved Animal Mechanics: Given the DLC's focus on hunting, players hoped for enhancements to animal companions, such as new skills, classes, or the ability to equip armor, which did not materialize.
  • Integration with Base Game: Some players felt that the DLC should have been integrated into the base game rather than being sold separately, as it did not significantly expand the overall gameplay experience.

Summary

  • Overall, while "Wartales - Contract: The Beast Hunt" has elements that some players enjoyed, it is mainly criticized for its brevity, performance issues, and lack of meaningful content additions, leading to a general recommendation to wait for sales before purchasing.
