Lossless Scaling - magic, science, or just really good code? Here’s how it helps older PCs handle modern games.
Lossless Scaling has been around since December 2018, making older, low-res games look crisp in fullscreen. But it’s not just for retro titles, it also helps modern games run better on low-end PCs. In January 2024, it got a huge upgrade with a frame generation feature that can boost FPS in games that don’t natively support it, including emulators.
Lossless Scaling blew up last year, going from just over 100 concurrent users to 4,000. But with the LSFG 3 update, that number skyrocketed, hitting an all-time peak of 20,000. Tons of people wanted to see if this less than $8 app could actually boost FPS on older PCs – and the verdict is in: it works!
Here’s what people are saying about the latest update:
Being able to play max visually and content-modded Witcher 3 on Ultra+ settings at 1440p at a stable 60 FPS with a almost 9 Year old PC (i7-6700k and a GTX 1080) is just mindblowing.

This absolute god app lets me get buttery smooth frames in games that don't support frame generation or DLSS!
Notably Helldivers 2, which has been running between 60-80 frames on my system, is now running at 144 FPS with the game capped at 72 FPS.

Using Frame Gen with a lot of older titles that aren't meant to be played at high framerates is a god send

But as pumpumking says:
good tool to gain fps, but need to study a bit on the settings to get the best effect
So, let’s talk what Lossless Scaling is all about. The app is a handy tool that enhances your gaming visuals by upscaling windowed games to fullscreen without introducing blur, ensuring pixel-perfect clarity. It's especially beneficial for older, pixel-art-style games, helping them look sharp on newer monitors. So naturally, it also improves performance in modern games on older PCs.
It’s worth mentioning that Lossless Scaling now forces fullscreen mode, so windowed mode is no longer supported.
With the January 10th update, Lossless Scaling got even better – especially if you want to play modern games like Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3, or Death Stranding. Here’s how it works:
So Lossless Scaling is best for:

Been with gamepressure.com since 2019, mostly writing game guides but you can also find me geeking out about LEGO (huge collection, btw). Love RPGs and classic RTSs, also adore quirky indie games. Even with a ton of games, sometimes I just gotta fire up Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, KOTOR, or Baldur's Gate 2 (Shadows of Amn, the OG, not that Throne of Bhaal stuff). When I'm not gaming, I'm probably painting miniatures or admiring my collection of retro consoles.
