Baldur's Gate 3 Unlikely to Hit PS4 and Xbox One

David Walgrave - one of the devs responsible for Baldur's Gate 3 - informed in an interview for Eurogamer that this title will most likely skip the current generation of consoles. The devices are too weak to run the new version of Divinity Engine.

The new game from Larian Studios may skip current-gen platforms.

IN A NUTSHELL:

  1. BG3 is unlikely to hit the current generation of consoles;
  2. The PS4 and Xbox One are too weak to run the new version of the engine created by Larian Studios;
  3. Releasing the game on legacy platforms would require compromises, including on texture quality.

Yesterday, thanks to the presentation on PAX East 2020, we finally received the first gameplay and a handful of facts about Baldur's Gate III, the RPG developed by the Belgian company Larian Studios. Today, thanks to the interviews conducted at the event, we got to know more details about the title. It turns out that the game will most likely skip PlayStation 4 and Xbox One - the platforms are unlikely to be powerful enough to run the game (via Eurogamer).

"I don't think that current-gen consoles would be able to run it. There's a lot of technical upgrades and updates that we did to our engine, and I don't know if it would be capable of being able to actually run on those things," said project producer David Walgrave.

The developer admitted that maybe it would be possible to make the game run even on the old consoles. However, this would require compromises, including on the quality of textures. So the owners of current generation platforms shouldn't lose hope - BG3 may yet appear on their hardware (for example, developers were willing to release Divinity: Original Sin II on Nintendo Switch, which is definitely weaker than Xbox One).

For now, Baldur's Gate III is coming to PC and Google Stadia. The game will be released in Steam early access this year.
