Battlefield 5 physical sales much worse than those of BF1

According to Chart-Track Group data for the UK market, Battlefield V sold less than half the number of physical copies, in comparison with Battlefield 1 in the same time span in 2016. The game also clearly loses to Call of Duty: Black Ops

Battlefield V was released on November 20th this year.

More than a week has passed since the official release of Battlefield V, the latest installment of the popular shooter series from DICE. Many players are wondering, how the production did on the market. Such people should be interested in the data provided by the Chart-Track company, according to which, in the UK, the physical edition of BF5 didn't sell even half as well as Battlefield 1 did two years earlier.

This information may sound tragic for Electronic Arts, but in fact, it should not be used as a basis for drawing conclusions about the failure of the game. The data comes from just one market, covering only the physical edition, which, in the face of the growing importance of digital distribution, is extremely unreliable. We received a good example of this last month when in the UK, physical copies of Assassin's Creed Odyssey found 26% fewer buyers than in case of Assassin's Creed Origins. It turned out that this year's edition of the Ubisoft's series had the best debut the franchise managed in years.

In the case of Battlefield V, the situation is further complicated by the fact that the game actually debuted three times. First, on November 9, it was made available to Origin Access Premier subscribers, and a week later, people with Deluxe editions joined the game. Some fans bought the title before the time frame analyzed in the Chart-Track data.

However, even taking all this into account, Electronic Arts still has some cause for concern. When it comes to selling physical copies on the UK market, Battlefield V couldn't achieve even half the results of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. DICE's new production also failed to match Battlefield Hardline's result, although in this case digital sales most likely gave BF5 a better debut than the police-themed spin-off of the series.
