The sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is entering the next stage of development. CD Projekt has announced the current status of work on Cyberpunk 2, previously known as Project Orion.
CD Projekt announced in the financial report for the first quarter of 2025 that the continuation of Cyberpunk 2077 has entered the pre-production phase. Moreover, the Polish company used the term "Cyberpunk 2" for the first time to describe this game, so perhaps this will be the official title of the sequel. So far, the sequel to the latest big RPG from CD Projekt Red has been known by the working title Project Orion.
As previously announced, the team of developers working on the game has also increased. Currently, 96 employees are involved in creating the second installment of Cyberpunk 2077. Let's recall that in the first months of 2025, there were 84 of them, so the project team has increased by 12 people.
Despite the growing team of creators, we'll have to wait a long time for the title. Pre-production is a really early stage of work. During an investor conference, Michal Nowakowski, one of the CEOs of CD Projekt Group, mentioned that this stage usually takes CD Projekt RED about "an average of 4-5 years." Nevertheless, the developers emphasized that "every project is unique" and therefore they don't want to indicate a "specific year" as the release date for Cyberpunk 2.
Also, the creators of The Witcher series have achieved a significant milestone with the expansion to the first Cyberpunk. The sale of the Phantom Liberty DLC (released in September 2023) has exceeded 10 million copies.
Cyberpunk 2077 will be one of the games available on the Nintendo Switch 2 on its release day, which is June 5, 2025. Below you can watch the commentary of Piotr Nielubowicz - the CFO of the company - regarding the financial results of CDP for the first quarter of the current fiscal year.
