IN A NUTSHELL:
  • Microsoft is launching the integration of Discord voice chat with the Xbox console;
  • Participants of the Xbox Insider program already have access to the new feature.

Discord gained its popularity as a voice messenger for gamers. Over time, however, it has undergone a slight facelift and is now a more universal meeting place. Until now, it has only been available on PCs and smartphones. Microsoft announces changes, however - the Xbox console is to receive support for voice communication via Discord.

Discord's voice conversations are available to participants in the Xbox Insider program, on early test versions of the console's software. Insiders can see the "Try Discord Voice on Xbox today!" tab on the side of the screen.

Unfortunately, this is still not the full version of the Discord app on Xbox, its features are severely limited compared to the PC version. It needs a smartphone with the mobile version and the Xbox app installed to work. Voice integration with the Discord network, however, can provide contact between players from different platforms.

This February Sony took a small step toward Discord by allowing an instant messaging account to be linked to a PlayStation Network profile. However, this option serves only to inform players of a running game and does not allow for communication. The integration of Discord's voice features with the Xbox console will be the first manifestation of the communicator's multiplatform capabilities.
