Dragon Ball Reboot Inbound? Director Wishes It

Dragon Ball is a world-renowned brand that has given us several shows and movies considered among the most popular anime ever made. In turn, characters such as Goku and Vegeta have permanently entered global pop culture. Unfortunately, nearly 40 years have passed since the debut of the first episodes of DB. And while generations of viewers are still enamored with their classic style, there are those who feel that the adaptation of Akira Toriyama's manga should be refreshed and brought up to current standards. In addition, new viewers may feel a bit lost in the plots and shows that spawned over these several decades.

One of the proponents of such an idea is Chikashi Kubota, who was responsible for the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie. As reported by Sportskeeda, at Japan Expo 2023, the creator of the popular animation stated that a reboot of Goku's adventures is needed for the franchise. He believes that a fresh start and the creation of a new storyline by including all timelines can make the series great again. Interestingly, the filmmaker has spoken with the producer of the last three Dragon Ball films, Norihiro Hayashida, on the matter.

Other priorities

Could a reboot of the series take place? In the coming years it is rather unlikely. Recall that we are still waiting for the continuation of Dragon Ball Super after the arc dedicated to the Tournament of Power. Admittedly, we still don't have any solid information on this topic, but most likely this is the priority project Toei Animation has for the series.

A risky venture

In addition, we must be aware that the reboot means re-creating both Dragon Balland Dragon Ball Z, i.e. two rather long series. On the other hand, the risk that the final work will not appeal to fans of the original is very high. After all, we have already seen more than once that interference with classics is met with negative reactions from the community. In the case of Dragon Ball (and I write this as a fan of the series), it is difficult to expect the creators to succeed in capturing the spirit of the original.
