Dune Movie Won't End With 2 Parts? Denis Villeneuve Reveals How Many Would be Enough

Originally Denis Villeneuve wanted to create an adaptation of Dune, a book by Frank Herbert, as a two-part movie experience. The huge success of the first part made Dune: Part Two, already looming on the horizon, that much more anticipared. However, the story does not end here - Herbert, and later his son, continued the plot and expanded the universe in many subsequent novels. It appears that Villeneuve also still has some stories to tell.

In an interview with Empire Denis Villeneuve shared his hopes of creating a third installment in this epic science fiction series, saying: 'If I manage to make a trilogy, it will be a dream come true.' Asked about the progress regarding the third movie, the director revealed only that 'the words are on paper'. The third part of the cinematic Dune would include the events taking place in Dune Messiah, the sequel to the original novel, of which Villeneuve says this:

Villeneuve also revealed that if the adaptation of Dune Messiah comes to fruition, the third movie will be his last in the series. After that, the director says, the books become more 'esoteric.'

Due to the ongoing strikes, the premiere of Dune: Part Two has been postponed to March 15, 2024. The movie will explore the further fate of Paul Atreides and what difficulties he will face before a possible third part.
