EA is Calm About BioWare's Future

President of Electronic Arts admitted that BioWare has recently had some problems and a few failed projects. Andrew Wilson stressed, however, that he is calm about the future of the Canadian developer.

IN A NUTSHELL:

  1. Andrew Wilson is calm about BioWare's future, despite poorly received games and key developers leaving;
  2. Employee turnover is normal in this industry, he said.

During EA's quarterly investor call, Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson said he was confident in BioWare's future, despite its recent problems (via PC Gamer).

"[BioWare] is an incredible studio filled with incredible people who do incredible work. And I think that from the outside wall, there have been some blips in their delivery over the last couple of years, but that has come as a result of them pushing deeply into innovation and creativity. And we feel very, very confident about their future road map, and we've talked about games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect in their future," said Wilson.

The Canadian company, responsible for creating the legendary RPG series Baldur's Gate, Mass Effect and Dragon Age, among others, has not had a good run recently. It had two unsuccessful (or not exactly successful) projects, in the form of Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem. To make matters worse, several well-known developers have left the studio, including Casey Hudson and Mark Darrah (and, before that, Fernando Melo, Drew Karpyshyn and Ben Irving). Andrew Wilson believes that this is the natural order of things.

"With respect to Casey and Mark leaving, again, both good friends of mine. We have tremendous respect for both of them. But this happens in the natural course of creative organizations from time to time. And we feel very, very good about the ongoing leadership of that studio and the many people who come to work every day to deliver great innovation and creativity," added EA's boss.

BioWare's next projects will be Mass Effect: Legendary Edition (a remaster of the first three installments of the series, which will hit the market in May this year) and Dragon Age 4 (a new installment of the dark fantasy series, which will probably take us to Tevinter and take up some of the plotlines raised in Dragon Age: Inquisition - the release date is unknown for now).
