A new rumor about Half-Life 3 has begun to circulate. But this time, fans will not believe it until they can quite literally install the game on their PCs.
Rumors are once again circulating about Half-Life 3, and fans are having none of it. Maybe this news is cropping up again partly because we finally know how long we’ll have to wait for Grand Theft Auto 6. As one game falls into place, the focus shifts to the next big mysterious game. An article from Wccftech was shared on the r/gaming subreddit, suggesting that Half-Life 3 is currently being playtested and is planning a summer reveal with a winter release date. The comments were full of great responses.
Half-Life 3 is the often-theorized, often-rumored next entry in Valve’s immensely popular and revolutionary series. Now, of course, Valve runs and operates the enormous PC gaming platform, Steam. This consistent revenue stream has taken away much of the pressure needed to make new games. That hasn’t stopped them though, as the VR Half-Life: Alyx received very positive reviews in 2020. Games like Grand Theft Auto 6 and Hollow Knight: Silksong might seem like fans have been impatiently asking for them for a long time, but rumors of Half Life 3 have come and gone for around two decades.
The validity of this rumor is debatable, but as is apparent via this Reddit post, fans have been burned by Half-Life 3 rumors a few too many times. The top voted comment reads: “Fool me once shame on you, fool me 21 years running…” Many users agreed with another comment: “Until its literally installed on my pc, half life 3 doesn’t exist…” showing the lack of believability that comes from so many unsubstantiated rumors.
It is fascinating to see the various community reactions to a long wait for a highly anticipated game. The Hollow Knight: Silksong fanbase has reached a point of posting fake social media posts from the developers as a popular meme format. With something like Half-Life 3 that has felt even less of a sure thing for far longer, they are barely accepting new rumors. There is no way to know, but it would be a fascinating experiment to see what would happen to the community if Silksong took another decade and a half to be released. Would they reach this same point? Or would they maintain the irony of it all?
Another user on Reddit commented: “I don’t quite believe it, but if this turns out to be true the whole ‘We got ___ before GTA 6’ meme needs to be officially retired, this would be the peak of it all.” Pointing out the ridiculousness of waiting for anything longer than Half-Life 3, even something that’s been in the works for as long as GTA 6. For now, we will have to wait to see if there is any truth to these Half-Life rumors. But take some advice from the gaming fan base, and don’t hold your breath.
