Hideo Kojima Receives Fine Arts Award for Death Stranding

Hideo Kojima received an award from Japan's Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for Death Stranding: Director's Cut. This is the second time in history that this unique award has gone to a video game developer.

Hideo Kojima, father of the Metal Gear brand and producer of Death Stranding, received the Fine Arts Award from Japan's Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. This significant award was brought to the designer by last year's Death Stranding: Director's Cut, which is a richer version of the 2019 bestselling action adventure game.

The committee approves

Kojima's achievement was announced by Kojima Productions' English-language account on Twitter. A relevant announcement also appeared on the official website of Japan Agency for Cultural Affairs (translation via Siliconera).

"The committee highlighted Death Stranding‘s dynamic interactions created by having the protagonist connect segregated societies as a courier."

So it's safe to say that gamers laughed at the aspect of the game that ultimately proved to be the foundation for the Japanese minister's award decision.

Metal Gear garners praised as well

While the mentioned distinction refers only to the game of 2019, the watchful eyes of the members of the committee of the Japan Agency for Cultural Affairs also noticed the Metal Gear series.

"The members also praised Kojima for his continued efforts to present methods that go beyond existing theories and can only be demonstrated in games, starting with his work on Metal Gear from 1987."

Kojima and Miyamoto

This is not the first time that an award from the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology has been given to a video game developer.

Such an event already took place in 2010, when the award was given to Shigeru Miyamoto, director of Nintendo and co-creator of such brands as Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, or The Legend of Zelda series.

So you have to admit that the bar for developers dreaming of receiving this award is set pretty high.

Death Stranding: Director's Cut

If you are not among the lucky owners of a PS5, and you'd want to play the game that brought Kojima an award from the minister himself, then nothing is lost.

Death Stranding: Director's Cut will be released on PC on March 30. It's worth mentioning that if you own the basic version of the game, you'll pay $10 for access to the extended edition.
