Homeworld 3 is the continuation of the franchise, which was awaited by thousands of fans. If you are one of them, you probably know every trick in the book. However, if you have not played for a long time or would like to give the series a chance, it may be useful to learn some tips. We are here to help you with that.

Homeworld 3 – Tips for Beginners

Take your time but be quick

Missions in Homeworld 3 are connected. You start the new one with army and resources gathered in the previous ones. It means that you should focus on strengthening army and collecting Resource Units (RUs) whenever you can. Remember that completing many objectives will end up with you finishing the mission automatically. So, if you don’t feel prepared, don’t rush them.

However, resources on the map are not infinite. Once they are all gone, you will start to lose combat and economical potential. Don’t overstay - take everything you can and run.

Always reach capacity

There is a capacity of units, which you can construct. Army is restricted by type and unit capacity. It means that you have to think about both of them. You can check them easily in the Population menu (upper left corner) or when you build new ships. You want to have always as many ships as possible, as there is no upkeep cost, and units go from mission to mission. Keep in mind that you can surpass population cap if you capture opponents’ vessels.

Rock, paper, scissor

Remember that all units and stances have some strong and weak points. The game makes a good job at explaining them in descriptions, spend some time on reading them. It is important to adjust your fleet to the needs.

Combat and surroundings

First of all, mind you surrounding. It can hide you and shield from attacks. Remember that only ships in Passive and Neutral stances use covers automatically.

Once you manage to sneak past your opponent unnoticed, you may attack them from behind. Bigger ships are vulnerable once attacked from the rear. Moreover, most vessels have the strongest guns directed in front of them and they are not as effective when they face a surprise attack from other directions.

Economy

Economy in Homeworld 3 is not complicated. You have to take care of your RUs and that’s all. You need to keep in mind to have your Resource Controllers at max capacity and make sure that they always do something. You have an indicator with unemployed RCs in the upper right corner.

There are 2 sources of RUs – “veins” and wreckages. On each map there are some fixed places to mine resources (let’s call them veins). They are a good source of Resource Units. Once they are all gone, try to finish the game as soon as possible. While it is possible to salvage wreckages, they are not a dependable source of income. First of all, you have to destroy the opponent’s big vessel. Second, they are difficult to harvest, as your RCs have to manually transport them to Mothership.

Upgrades

There is a great chance that you will research upgrades automatically. If not, you should do that, as they may be a great boost for your units’ abilities (at least for a short time). However, you need to remember to turn them on. It is easy to forget about them during combat.

Tactical pause

Combat in Homeworld 3 can be intense. You can ease the tension a little bit by using a tactical pause (P). You can do many actions in this mode, however not all of them. For example, you will not see a contextual menu (right click + alt). In the case of adding units to the building queue, it works, but it does not pop up graphically. The numbers in the menu will change once you unpause the game though.

What to do when you get stuck

So, you have won a mission after a long fight… however, at what cost – no resources, no ships. Is everything lost? Do you have to replay the whole mission once again? No! Developers have thought about that and have prepared a special option.

If you want, you can go to Campaign menu (upper part of the starting screen). From there it is possible to select the recent mission and pick settings (lower left corner of the screen). There, you can choose default fleet. Thanks to that you will be able to play using ships which should, at least theoretically, help you win the new challenge. Well… you can also change difficulty.
