Horizon Forbidden West Devs Confirm Series' Future

On the occasion of a change of leadership at Guerrilla Games, the developers responsible for the Horizon series have confirmed that a new installment of the series is on the way. Work is also underway on an „online adventure.”.

Executive changes have been announced at Guerrilla Games, the development studio most recently known for the Horizon series (Horizon: Zero Down and Horizon: Forbidden West).

Acting director and executive producer Angie Smets, who has previously served as director and executive producer, is moving to PlayStation Studios, where she will assume the position of head of development strategy. Guerrilla Games revealed the upcoming staff reshuffle in an official announcement on its website.

The future of Aloy's adventures

Along with this announcement, we got confirmation that the next installment of the Horizon series is in development. The studio is also working on an online project.

"We have full confidence in our new management to lead Guerrilla Games into a bright future, expanding the world of Horizon with Aloy's next adventure and our exciting online project. Michiel van der Leeuw (technical director) will focus on future technology and strategy for the Decima engine."

This means that Horizon 3 has been, so to speak, officially confirmed (although it was already suggested by reports from a year ago). Mention of an "exciting online project," on the other hand, may mean that the rumors that the developer is working on an MMO set in the world of Horizon will turn out to be true.

What does the new management structure at Guerrilla Games look like? From the announcement we learn that:

"[...] the management team now consists of Joel Eschler (director), Hella Schmidt (director and general manager) and Jan-Bart van Beek (director/art director)."

It is worth mentioning that Angie Smets is another "transfer" from Guerrilla Games to PlayStation Studios. In 2019, the then chief director Hermen Hulst left the studio. It seems that Sony greatly appreciates the management in the Dutch team.
