Some might say that sandbox games have no plot at all and are without any purpose or sense of direction. Others can see a whole world of unlimited possibilities, scenarios and endless replayability. The latter explains the unprecedented popularity of the original Dwarf Fortress, which inspired a number of other productions with similar gameplay principles. Without a doubt, RimWorld is a successful take on this idea, gathering tens of thousands of fans daily, in a strictly singleplayer experience title. Recently, a new expansion named Odyssey has been launched (July 11, 2025), though in order to fully grasp the variety it offers, it will be needed to build a spaceship, or rather a gravship, first. Though in the very beginning, even before we can think about constructing our own vessel, a drive will be required. It can’t be any type of motor though, as we are gunning for grav engine that will allow us to explore the unknown corners of space. How to get it, though? Let’s find out.

How to obtain grav engine for gravship in RimWorld Odyssey

Every year, since 2020, developers from Ludeon Studios add new, themed expansion packs to their beloved game – RimWorld. After Royalty, Ideology, Biotech, and Anomaly, the time has come to conquer space in a content patch entitled Odyssey. However, to do so, we’ll need an engine for our spaceship, and those do not come by easily. How to get the grav engine to drive a proper gravship?

The easiest way to do this is by starting the Gravship Scenario that will provide you with a grav engine from the get-go with some additional materials as a bonus. This, however, comes with a caveat that after a couple of days you will be hunted by Mechanoids no matter where you venture off to. This forces you to make frog leaps around the map, effectively making it impossible to settle down peacefully. This can be an interesting adventure on its own, though not everyone would like to be limited by such circumstances.

Another method of getting the grav engine is by playing as usual, and eventually, a quest will become available where the engine crash landing event will be triggered on your map, allowing you to harvest it and relocate it to where you want it to. This way you are able to take whatever playstyle you like, though bear in mind that gravship materials are very hard to obtain as they are very scarce, and thus your space endeavor will take a lot longer to get off the ground… quite literally.

Those are not the only ways to get the gravship up and running, as some fans have already come up with a modification. The mod makes it possible to construct the grav engine straight from the Fabrication Bench. This takes the best of both worlds, though obviously interferes with the vision that the developers had on this technology and pace of progression. That being said, RimWorld is a singleplayer position that you should experience in the way you want it, so don’t feel bad adjusting the game. The most important part is for you to have fun. Good luck!
