Sandra Bullock is a major figure in Hollywood, earning her position with roles in comedies such as The Proposal and Miss Congeniality, as well as dramatic productions, including The Blind Side, for which she won an Oscar.

Not long after this event, the actress went through the highly publicized breakup and divorce from Jesse James, which affected her negatively and took away her desire to get back in front of the cameras. Bullock did not feel like working or going out into the world at all, which could have ended her career.

However, she was saved from this by an offer to appear in the film Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, where she was to play alongside Tom Hanks. As she confessed, even though she thought she wasn't ready for it yet, she couldn't pass up Stephen Daldry's proposal and returned to the game (via The Hollywood Reporter).

I was perfectly content to be permanently broken. I honestly didn’t think I was in a place where I wanted to work or wanted to step out of where I was. I wasn’t prepared. But the opportunity was louder than my head.

The new role helped the actress get back to work in a film that tells the story of a boy who cannot come to terms with the absence of his father, who was killed in the WTC attack. The boy decides to find the lock to which he has the key left by his dad. Next productions came soon after this one, including 2013's Gravity, for which Bullock lived to see another Oscar nomination.
