Just 4 Years Ago Total War on Steam Achieved 192,000 People at Launch, Now Pharaoh Can't Reach 6,000

Four years were enough for Total War to go from being a game series that ignited the minds of hundreds of thousands of gamers, to a brand with little excitement. The latest installment - Pharaoh - is entertaining barely a handful of fans of the series.

The Total War series no longer generates as much interest as it did even four years ago. Back then, at launch Three Kingdoms was played by more than 190,000 concurrent Steam users. Now Pharaoh is struggling to exceed even 6,000 in the peak.

  1. Total War: Pharaoh - official website.

Are gamers abandoning the Total War series?

Total War: Pharaoh launched on PC two days ago via Steam (it's still unavailable in Epic Games Store). On Valve's platform the game was played by a maximum of 5424 people at the same time. Let's point out, however, that the first post-release weekend is just beginning and these numbers can still change.

  1. For comparison, when Total War: Three Kingdoms launched in 2019, the game was played by as much as 192,290 in the launch peak (the success was helped by, among other things high sales in China). Current results of Pharaoh pale by comparison.
  2. Interestingly, Steam users are still eagerly reaching for Three Kingdoms. In the last 24 hours, the record for the number of players was 8600. on the other hand Pharaoh was able to boast a score of 4701 people, a bit over half of that.
  3. As for the first reviews of Total War: Pharaoh, they are "mixed". At the moment, the title has accumulated more than 700 reviews on Steam, 63% of which are positive. For comparison, Three Kingdoms has almost 100,000 reviews, 71% of which are positive.

Developers of Total War at one time also bought the license for Warhammer. As a result of this cooperation, three installments of Total War: Warhammer were released. The activity records of these games on Steam are as follows:

  1. Total War: Warhammer (2016) - 113,019 concurrent players on Steam;
  2. Total War: Warhammer II (2017) - 84,920 concurrent players on Steam;
  3. Total War: Warhammer III (2022) - 166,754 concurrent players on Steam.

Recall that between Three Kingdoms and Pharaoh, the devs released another part of Total War, which is not the result of cooperation with the Warhammer brand - Troy. It, too, did not gather too many players on Steam around its release. To date, its best score is 4704 players.

However, it should be mentioned that this data is not entirely authoritative. On the day of its release Total War Saga: Troy lived to see an exceptional discount on Epic Games Store, which provided the opportunity to get a free copy of the title for 24 hours after its debut. According to available information as many as 7.5 million Epic Games users took advantage of this offer at the time.
