Microsoft is expanding the protection offered on desktop platforms to mobile devices. The public preview version of ATP (Advanced Threat Protection) Defender is now available on Android (via Windows Central). An iOS version is also planned. The offer is addressed mainly to business users who already use Defender ATP solutions on other platforms.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  • ATP Defender has been released on Android in the preview version as an extension of protection used in desktop devices;
  • Microsoft is also planning mobile versions for Apple iOS;
  • As of today we can also download the Linux version of the ATP Defender.

The mobile version of Microsoft's security app will protect against phishing in communicators, email clients and browsers. It will also enable the user to scan for potentially harmful applications, malware and dangerous files. Thanks to integration with other Microsoft software components (e.g. Microsoft Endpoint Manager), Defender ATP will protect corporate networks against attacks from mobile devices. The application will cooperate with Microsoft Defender Security Center, thanks to which it will react faster to threats on all supported platforms.

An iOS version of the client is also in preparation. However, this version may be slightly shafted in comparison to other versions due to platform limitations, such as standard launching of apps in sandbox mode. Meanwhile, instructions for downloading and installing the apps available on Android can be found here, and for Linux, here. They require a Microsoft business account or a Defender ATP subscription. This way of obtaining the Defender will be valid as long as the app has public preview status. Once the full version is available, it will be releases in Google Play, although it is not known at the moment under what rules.
