New Need for Speed won't be coming too soon, but it will definitely be created. „We plan to bring the franchise back in new and interesting ways”
Fans of the Need for Speed series won't see a new installment for a long time. Criterion studio is now fully focused on Battlefield 7.
It's been over two years since the release of the latest game in the Need for Speed series. Unbound, which was met with a lukewarm response, received its last big update at the end of last year, and there are no indications of another one coming soon. Moreover, according to the words of Electronic Arts vice president, Vince Zampella, we should not expect a quick release of the new installment of NFS.
This is according to information about Criterion Games studio (via Eurogamer), which is responsible for, among others, the modern installments of this racing game series. Vince Zampella revealed that at this moment the entire team is helping with the work on the new Battlefield. In 2023, EA reported that only a part of the team that created NFS Unbound was assigned to this project, but apparently more people were needed.
Even though Zampelli mentioned that Criterion studio has spent the past year collecting fans' feedback on Unbound, which they intend to consider for the next installment of the series, it will be a while before we hear about the new title. Since the team is fully focused on Battlefield 7, they cannot work on NFS in the meantime.
Criterion are joining their colleagues working on Battlefield. As a company, it was important to us to take the last year to listen to our Need for Speed community and use their feedback to create content for Unbound - said Vince Zampella.
We know that the new Need for Speed won't be released anytime soon (it's difficult to say what stage the project is at), but the vice president's words reassure us that the game will eventually be made. And perhaps it will be a kind of "breath of freshness" for the entire series:
