Battlefield 6 is - contrary to its name - the tenth main installment of the popular first-person shooter (FPS) series by Electronic Arts. It was mainly created by the Swedish studio EA DICE, which has been developing the series since 2002. This time, the team's work, which began at the turn of 2021 and 2022, was led by Vince Zampella, co-founder of Respawn Entertainment. This is the studio also responsible for Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, acquired by EA in 2017.

In addition to EA DICE, the studios EA Motive (responsible for the story campaign), Criterion Games and Ripple Effect were engaged in the development.

Open Beta

The first beta tests for Battlefield 6 are scheduled for August 6 and 7, 2025. Access to them was granted to players who joined Battlefield Labs before July 31, 2025, as well as viewers of selected streams on the Twitch service (as part of so-called Twitch Drops).

Battlefield 6 review: Getting back to the roots paid off

Battlefield 6 may not be a perfect game, but it is definitely the best game in the series in a long time, and it's hard to describe just how good it feels to play Battlefield again.

In multiplayer games, interaction with other players obviously plays one of the biggest roles in building gameplay satisfaction. However, it seems that the course of this interaction differs depending on the platform.

Battlefield 6 is a successful entry for the Battlefield series, offering engaging gameplay and a stable experience on current-gen hardware. Battlefield 6 is, at its best, a reminder of why we fell in love (in October) with this franchise in the first place. It's relentlessly fun when everything clicks. Even with its few rough edges and some missing pieces, it's hard not to be impressed by how well this entry captures the spirit of Battlefield's golden era.

Sure, I could complain about the rather modest content at launch and the terrible storyline in single-player mode, but in reality, these are minor inconveniences. Battlefield 6 is an FPS that I had a lot of fun playing, and I know I won't be moving on from this title anytime soon. Although I still have a lot of affection for the older installments, I already feel that I will spend hundreds, maybe even thousands of hours with the sixth installment – as long as the developers don't give up and consistently deliver new content. I look to the future with hope and joy, wondering what else the developers have in store for us. Nevertheless, Battlefield 6 is already an excellent game with sensational optimization, great visuals, and phenomenal sound, and above all, gameplay that is completely addictive, providing many hours of great fun.

Battlefield is so back! The development teams have delivered on the promise to bring the series back to its best. Whilst everything isn’t perfect, it isn’t far from being perfection across the board. Whilst the campaign isn’t the most memorable experience, it is worth playing through its five-hour-long adventure. Where Battlefield 6 really shines is in the multiplayer modes, with impressive cinematics, destruction, and that 64-player classic gameplay we all know and love. I’d say this is a potential game of the year contender, which doesn’t just deliver gunfire and explosions, it catapults you into the immersion of modern warfare, where every single moment feels intense as it does unforgettable.

The main pros of the game

  • Gunplay and Gameplay: Many users praised the gunplay as "amazing" and "crisp," bringing back the feel reminiscent of earlier Battlefield titles like BF3 and BF4. The gameplay is described as fun, dynamic, and chaotic, with a satisfying sense of immersion due to sound design and visual effects.
  • Return to Form: Players feel that the game has successfully returned to the roots of the Battlefield series, with classic elements like classes and squad play being central to the experience. This has rekindled nostalgia for long-time fans.
  • No EA Launcher Required: The game does not require EA's own launcher, which users found to be a significant advantage for a AAA title.
  • Community Engagement: Players appreciated that the developers listened to feedback from the beta and made improvements for the full release.
  • Content and Updates: There is an expectation of ongoing content for at least five years, which excites many users.

The main cons of the game

  • Small Maps: A significant number of reviews criticized the maps for being too small, leading to a gameplay experience that feels cramped and chaotic. Players expressed a desire for larger maps that allow for more strategic gameplay and vehicle use.
  • Gameplay Chaos: While some enjoy the fast pace, others feel that the gameplay is too frantic and lacks the tactical depth that characterized previous Battlefield games.
  • Technical Issues: Users reported various bugs and issues, including hit detection problems and netcode inconsistencies that can lead to frustrating gameplay experiences.
  • Campaign Mode: The single-player campaign was generally viewed as lackluster and not up to the standards of previous titles, with many finding it forgettable and poorly executed.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Larger Maps: Many players expressed a strong desire for the return of the large, expansive maps that were a hallmark of earlier Battlefield games, which fostered tactical gameplay and vehicle combat.
  • Dynamic Events and Destruction: Users missed the "levolution" features from previous games that dramatically changed the battlefield environment, such as collapsing buildings or large-scale destruction.
  • Class System Limitations: While the return of classes was welcomed, some players felt that the open weapon system diminished class identity and teamwork, leading to less strategic gameplay.
  • Customization Options: There were complaints about limited customization options, especially regarding the mini-map and other settings.
  • Monetization Practices: Many users were unhappy with the introduction of a battle pass and microtransactions in a full-priced game, feeling that it detracted from the experience.

Summary

  • Overall, while Battlefield™ 6 has been well-received for its core gameplay and nostalgic elements, it faces criticism for its map design, pacing, and monetization strategies, with many players hoping for future updates to address these issues.
