Battlefield 6 is - contrary to its name - the tenth main installment of the popular first-person shooter (FPS) series by Electronic Arts. It was mainly created by the Swedish studio EA DICE, which has been developing the series since 2002. This time, the team's work, which began at the turn of 2021 and 2022, was led by Vince Zampella, co-founder of Respawn Entertainment. This is the studio also responsible for Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, acquired by EA in 2017.

In addition to EA DICE, the studios EA Motive (responsible for the story campaign), Criterion Games and Ripple Effect were engaged in the development.

Open Beta

The first beta tests for Battlefield 6 are scheduled for August 6 and 7, 2025. Access to them was granted to players who joined Battlefield Labs before July 31, 2025, as well as viewers of selected streams on the Twitch service (as part of so-called Twitch Drops).

Battlefield 6 review: Getting back to the roots paid off

Battlefield 6 may not be a perfect game, but it is definitely the best game in the series in a long time, and it's hard to describe just how good it feels to play Battlefield again.

Battlefield is back. While the single-player campaign of Battlefield 6 has its moments, it's pretty mediocre on the whole. Thankfully the game's extensive multiplayer offerings make up for it. The action here is fast-paced and wonderfully intense, making each match rewarding whether you win or lose. Some maps could do with some tweaks, but other than that there's not much to complain about.

VG247: 4 / 5

As it is right now, with the quality and quantity of content in the launch package of Battlefield 6, it is incredibly easy to recommend the game to anyone who enjoys multiplayer shooters. It’s an especially exciting proposition for those of us who just cannot keep up with Call of Duty’s rollerskates-based movement and its instantaneous time-to-kill. There’s finally a compelling middle ground between the indecipherability of tactical shooters and the yearly slop of CoD, and it’s one you won’t have to convince yourself to play simply because it’s there, you’ll do it with a big grin on your face because of how fun it is.

Wccftech: 8.5 / 10 by David Carcasole

Battlefield 6 is an incredibly strong return to form for the series, with a multiplayer experience that is finely tuned with huge potential for what it could build into, destruction mechanics that bring a level of immersion back to the series that it was missing, and a more than solid visual and sound design package tying up how endlessly fun it is to play. The single-player campaign fails to impress, but the multiplayer experience more than makes up for it.

The main pros of the game

  • Gameplay Mechanics: Many players appreciate the gunplay, noting it feels crisp and responsive. The core gameplay mechanics evoke nostalgia for earlier Battlefield titles, with some players enjoying the return of classic class systems.
  • Graphics and Sound Design: The game features impressive visuals and sound design, contributing to an immersive experience. Players noted the destruction mechanics as a highlight, with buildings collapsing and dynamic environments.
  • Optimized Performance: The game runs smoothly on various systems, with players reporting minimal bugs and good optimization.
  • Community Engagement: Some reviews mention that the developers seem to listen to player feedback and have made adjustments since the beta, improving the gameplay experience.

The main cons of the game

  • Map Design: Many players criticize the maps for being too small and poorly designed, leading to chaotic gameplay that feels more like Call of Duty than traditional Battlefield. There’s a desire for larger, more strategic maps that allow for vehicle use and tactical maneuvers.
  • Weapon and Progression System: The weapon progression and attachment unlock system is seen as tedious and overly grindy. Players expressed frustration with the time required to unlock basic attachments, which detracts from the overall enjoyment.
  • Monetization and Battle Pass: The introduction of a Battle Pass and heavy monetization is a significant point of contention. Players feel that the game prioritizes microtransactions over genuine gameplay improvements, leading to a feeling of being nickel-and-dimed.
  • Netcode and Hit Registration Issues: Players have reported ongoing issues with hit registration and netcode, leading to frustrating gameplay experiences where shots do not register correctly.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Larger Maps and Classic Battlefield Elements: Players miss the large, open maps and dynamic elements (like Levolution) that characterized earlier Battlefield games. There is a call for more strategic map designs that allow for varied gameplay styles.
  • Class Identity and Role Specialization: The removal of strict class roles and the ability for players to mix and match weapons has diluted the unique identities of each class, which some players feel is essential to the Battlefield experience.
  • Community Features: There are calls for better community features, such as server browsers and persistent lobbies, which were staples in previous Battlefield titles.
  • Improved AI and Campaign Quality: The campaign mode has been criticized for lacking depth and engagement, with players desiring a more compelling single-player experience.

Summary

  • In summary, while Battlefield 6 has some solid foundations and enjoyable mechanics, it faces significant criticism regarding its design choices, monetization practices, and technical issues, leaving many long-time fans feeling disappointed.
