Oblivion Remastered crashing on launch and during shaders compilation? This error may be fixed
The Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion Remastered is out now. Unfortunately, the game may crash on launch and during shaders compilation. So, how to fix this?

Bethesda has prepared quite a surprise for us. The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Remastered was dropped today on PC, Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. So, you can buy this title (or eventually try it out via the Game Pass subscription) right now. However, there is one “problem” – the title was rewritten on Unreal Engine 5. While the games created on this engine look beautiful, they are also often demanding and cause some technical problems for players (for various reasons). In the case of Oblivion, people report crashes.
Oblivion Remastered crashing on launch and during shaders compilation
A game release without technical problems is a rare (or maybe even legendary) event. Today, many players were also out of luck, as launching Oblivion Remastered may cause headaches. Like I said earlier, the game crashes on startup for some people. This can occur mainly at three points – on launch and during files unpacking or shaders compilation. Of course, there are solutions for this problem.
First of all, you should try some simple solutions.
- Update drivers.
- Verify files.
- Run the game as administrator (use the exe file in the game directory, not launcher).
Secondly, one of the players posted a simple method on Steam forum. However, it requires modifying game files. So, you do this at your own risk. Additionally, you should remember to make a copy of the original files.
- Open the folder: Steam \ steamapps \ common \ Oblivion Remastered \ Engine \ Plugins \ Marketplace \ nvidia \ DLSS \ Streamline \ Binaries \ ThirdParty \ Win64 (of course, without spaces)
- Delete or rename file called: sl.pcl.dll
The last source of the problem which we can think of may be hidden in your own computer. Do you have an Intel processor from 13th or 14th generation? If the answer is yes, you might have found your culprit. UE5 productions do not work well with these hardware. However, it is not the game’s fault but processors’ themselves. It is a known issue, acknowledged by Intel itself. What should you do? Try updating BIOS in your computer.
If the Oblivion Remastered shows the error while unpacking, it can mean that you don't have enough free disk space. Even if you have enough, the game seems to need some spare GB to sort the files. This may actually require you to have even as many as additional 125 GB of free space (around 250 GB in total).
Additionally, I personally experienced crash in one more situation. When I was changing upscaling technology in the settings, Oblivion Remastered showed an error message. However, the game didn’t close properly and had to be terminated by the task manager. After that, the title restarted without any major problems.
