Today, Bethesda shadow dropped The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, making it available for everyone. Even today’s livestream announcement called this remaster “the worst kept secret” so while it may not have been the most surprising announcement, it is still exciting, nonetheless. Despite the rumors, Bethesda could still have used today’s stream to get ahead of the story and announce a release date a month or two away. Instead, a short documentary delved into the significance of Oblivion to everyone at Bethesda, introducing Virtuous, the studio that helped create this remaster, followed by a gameplay stream.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is available now

The livestream began this morning at 8:00 AM. The stream lasted about an hour, with the shadow drop announced just after everyone at Bethesda shared their thoughts and experiences working on the remaster. For many people, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which was released almost fifteen years ago, was their first experience with this series. Bethesda promised that they are still working on the sixth entry in this legendary RPG series, but for now, this should keep a large portion of the player base occupied.

This Oblivion Remaster has been rebuilt from scratch, according to the developers. Every asset and visual has been tirelessly recreated between Bethesda and their partner studio Virtuous. You may be wondering who this other studio is that has helped so much with this remaster but also was a major source of leaks last week. Virtuous is a game development studio that has helped support some great triple A productions over the last few years, including projects with Bethesda like Doom Eternal, but also other studios around the world. They have worked on games like Stellar Blade, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Rise of the Ronin, Sea of Thieves, and more.

As the public finally gets their hands on this long-awaited rumor, it will be interesting to see their reaction. In terms of hotly anticipated, long-awaited follow-ups, The Elder Scrolls VI might only be outdone by this year’s current hot topics, Grand Theft Auto VI and Hollow Knight: Silksong. Will this remaster be enough to satiate Elder Scrolls fans for a year or two, or will it stir up more excitement and hype for Bethesda’s future project? If both of those other highly anticipated games do end up releasing this year, there won’t be much left in the way of distracting the wider gaming audience.

Thankfully, as of today, there are plenty of ways to get your hands on this remaster. Despite Bethesda now being an Xbox Studio, that hasn’t stopped the shadow drop from arriving on other platforms. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is available across nearly all platforms now. It’s $49.99 on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, but is also available for Xbox and PC Game Pass subscribers. A handful of Steam reviews are already pouring in, which seems far too early, but those reviews are, at least currently, 100% positive.
