Probably no one expected that a modification for Half-Life created by Minh Le and Jess Cliffe back in 2000 will become a global phenomenon and e-sports icon. Today, Counter Strike is widely known franchise with millions of active players. Of course, the series can’t be stagnant, and thus it was, and still is, a subject to many changes and content updates. CS2 is a more modern take on the classical Counter Strike experience and it takes a lot from contemporary titles. Not long ago, Premier Season 2 has ended to welcome the third one day after, as it was expected. Players’ opinions about the new season are a mixed bag, though the most controversies are sparked by the choice of maps, especially the fact that instead of beloved Cache we received Overpass. Is there any particular reason for that? Let’s try to unveil this mystery.

Overpass instead of Cache in CS2 Premier Season 3

While it may appear that First Person Shooters are simple games that do not require a lot of thought, those can be in fact one of the most complex productions to balance out. This statement becomes more prominent when we consider that a wide variety of fans are playing it, ranging from complete newbies to die-hard professionals who earn their living playing it. We have to remember that CS2 is among the most popular e-sports titles on the planet, so even seemingly insignificant changes like choice of maps bear huge consequences. This is most probably the reason why Overpass was selected instead of Cache for Premier Season 3 in Counter Strike 2. Let me explain a bit more.

For most of us maps in FPS games are only a mere decoration, a virtual playground to spend a couple of minutes or hours to have fun. In fact, though, they are meticulously created arenas where everyone must have fair chances of winning, whether it is a pro or a novice. Due to that, to balance out the experience and even the odds, a number of changes backed by huge amounts of data are required. Such a process can take weeks or months before a map can be fully enjoyed by a full range of fans. And this is most probably the very reason why Overpass was chosen instead of Cache, since the latter is still in the works and was only available in Steam’s Workshop.

This fact might be hard to accept by many players, though this is the most reasonable explanation of Valve’s decision. We can see that Anubis was also taken down from the map pool. It can be due to the fact that it is the least played map by a big margin, while also being T-sided, which means that the Terrorist’s were in a better position to win, while the chances should be roughly the same, dependent only on the players’ skills.

Don’t worry, though, as without a doubt Cache will make it to Premier Season sooner or later. Just give the developers some time to cook. With time, they will definitely prepare something worth waiting for. Till then, though, give Overpass a go and try to learn its tricks to gain as much advantage as possible. Good luck!
