What the update actually does is fully integrate Quake Live with Steamworks, using its Friends, Chat, Lobbies, Voice Chat, Server Browser, Statistics, Achievements, Anti-cheat, Trading Cards, and Workshop – the developers explained in Steam News. Unfortunately, that means all player’s progress had to be removed and is not coming back. The transition also resulted in giving all players equal access to the game’s content, bringing foregoing subscriptions to an end.

Quake Live existed as a free-to-play PC online shooter for over 6 years. In early 2014 it dropped browser environment for a game client, and later, in September 2014 launched on Steam. All this time Quake Live offered a free model with optional Premium subscriptions. Not any more.
