RTX With Portal Launched on Steam; Reactions Lack Enthusiasm

Portal with RTX has debuted on Steam. The refreshed version of the classic impresses with graphics, but players complain about poor performance.

Yesterday Portal with RTX, a free expansion that improves the graphics of the popular puzzle game by, among other things, adding ray tracing, debuted on Steam. The DLC was received coldly by the community.

  1. On Steam only 51% of user ratings are praising Portal with RTX, which is categorized as "mixed reception".
  2. In comparison - the basic version of Portal was appreciated by as much as 98% of players who gave it a rating.
  3. Looking at the user reviews, the main problem of Portal with RTX is poor performance. Below we cite sample reviews from Steam.

"It set the dust in my PC on fire :D I recommend, I heat my house with it, instead of a heater."/p>

"Like 80's cinema 24 fps..."

"Beautiful tech demo, but it's impossible to play without spending a few thousand on hardware.... - Crysis of our time :P We will see each other again in 4-5 generations, maybe even in 4K."

"I can't tell if it's my computer or my lawnmower."

"I will say this, the game runs average with this ray rracing. I know I probably don't even measure up to recommended, but for an R5 5600X, 32Gb of RAM and an RTX 2060S I expected at least a stable 30fps on medium settings. Well, on minimum the game goes at 10-20fps in bright areas and 25fps in vignette mode, in which, by the way, the textures look squashed. Although the metallic sheen actually suits the atmosphere of the test rooms yes the lighting is a bit too much pushed, which at the same time makes the optimization suffer. I honestly believe that the free nature of this DLC will cause other players a problem, because the incentive is interesting, the potential effects are tempting, but the playability is nil. In truth, I'm hoping for some sort of patch for the RTX 20XX series because many people will be severely disappointed with the experience due to the cost of newer graphics cards. Definitely not recommended for now."

So it remains to be hoped that the developers will improve performance with the update and thus the reception of Portal with RTX will also improve.

Performance problems, however, do not prevent many users from playing. The launch day activity record was 7169 concurrent users. This is more than double the number of Aperture Desk Job, which is this year's other free game from the universe of Portal.
