Alice Games shared a first look at their upcoming game, Shark Dentist. As ridiculous as it sounds, this team went all in on this horrifying idea.
Today, Alice Games shared a post to Reddit teasing their new game, Shark Dentist, and it’s the most tense I’ve been watching a sixty-second trailer. The game is just as it (terrifyingly) sounds: use various tools and equipment to provide dental exams for sharks. The sixty-second trailer shows a character working on the shark’s teeth, sticking their head into the immobilized mouth of the dangerous creature. But, as secure as it may seem, I couldn’t help imagining the jaw snapping shut.
The absurd concept seems to have been well thought out. The Reddit post reads, “For over a year, a small team and I have been working to bring the idea of a shark dentist to life…” and it shows. This doesn’t look like some half-baked, ridiculous idea from a few indie devs. The trailer seems well-polished, and as terrifying as it may look, the core gameplay sounds kinda great.
If you are too nervous to watch the trailer, I don’t blame you. My first thought when I saw the opening frames was that this had something to do with zombie sharks because the shark in the trailer is not looking too hot. Then the dentist sticks their head into the mouth, getting a look at the teeth, and all I could think about was the mouth snapping closed. But then we get to see some gameplay moments. The player must examine each tooth and use the proper tools to clean it, which reminded me a little of games like PowerWash Simulator.
But, of course, there is a risk involved. The sharks are wheeled into your office, secured to the ceiling with chains, and put under anesthesia. But as the developer writes in their Reddit post, “any mistake or painful movement could wake them up. The higher the stress, the faster they’ll wake and may attack.” If you’ve ever been to the dentist, you probably know how common it is to feel a touch of pain when someone is working on your teeth.
Shark Dentist combines the stress of an accurate medical simulator with the fear and horror of dealing with deadly animals. Apparently, there is a wide variety of sharks, with each patient offering unique characteristics and requiring a different approach. This feels like one of those games that had a great concept and ran away with it. These developers didn’t stop halfway through the idea.
If you have any ideas or comments, share them with the developers on Reddit. They say that “feedback is more valuable than gold!” Plus, if Shark Dentist looks like a game you might want to try, remember to wishlist it on Steam, it goes a long way towards helping independent developers.
