Skyrim Anniversary Edition Content Will Reference Morrowind and Oblivion

Bethesda announced that Skyrim Anniversary Edition will include new adventures referencing Morrowind and Oblivion. In addition, fans have prepared a list of mods not supported by this edition.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  1. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition will offer new adventures referencing Morrowind and Oblivion;
  2. These stories will be available to those who buy the new edition. The owners of the Special Edition will get them for free, but only on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5;
  3. On PC you will have to pay extra for these adventures.

Bethesda has announcedthat The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition will offer new adventures, whose stories will refer to the earlier installments of the series.

The quest called "Ghosts of the Tribunal" will enable us to get dozens of weapons known from The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. On the other hand, in "The Cause" we'll face an organization trying to open another Oblivion gate, similar to those from The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. The second of these adventures will offer new locations, enemies, and items. It will also enable us to summon a horse used by the Daedra.

In the released trailer we can see fragments of this new content, as well as take a look at the previously announced attractions, which will also come for free to owners of the old Special Edition, such as a survival mode, fishing opportunities, and the "Saints and Seducers" storyline (first released in 2019), featuring a number of new quests, locations and enemies. In addition, khajiit caravans were shown, which will provide rare ingredients from different regions of Tamriel, enabling us to create new potions, arrows, and poisons.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition will launch on November 11 for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The same day the owners of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition will receive an update with fishing, survival mode, khajiit caravans and the "Saints and Seducers" story line.

Owners of Special Edition on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S will receive the "Ghosts of the Tribunal" and "The Cause" for free as an update. On PC, you will have to pay extra for these attractions.

What mods will stop working on PC with Anniversary Edition

On consoles, the new release of the game is supposed to bring only benefits. Things will be different on PC. The changes will make all mods using unofficial scripts and changing Skyrim's so-called native code to stop working. How big problem it will be, you can find out by analyzing the list prepared by fans it summarizes the mods that will not be compatible with the Anniversary Edition. It's not complete, but it's still a pain to look through.

First of all, projects that are the foundation for other mods will not work, including:

  1. Skyrim Script Extender 64 (SKSE64)
  2. Address Library for SKSE Plugins
  3. SkyUI
  4. DLL Plugin Loader
  5. xSHADOWMANx's Dll Loader
  6. ENB

These projects are required by countless other mods to Skyrim and they will need an update for Anniversary Edition. The problem is that this won't be enough to make older mods work, because their authors will have to rework them as well, and many creators stopped working on them long ago. A lot of them are unlikely to come back to fix what Bethesda messed up.

Other popular mods that will not be compatible with Anniversary Edition:

  1. TK Dodge
  2. Alternate Conversation Camera
  3. Better Jumping
  4. CBP Physics
  5. Classic Sprinting Redone
  6. Display Enemy Level
  7. Dynamic Potions
  8. Floating Damage
  9. Glow Be Gone
  10. Quick Loot
  11. RaceMenu
  12. True Directional Movement
  13. XP32 Maximum Skeleton
  14. moreHUD
  15. JContainers
  16. Named Quicksaves
  17. UIExtensions

The worst part about all this is that Anniversary Edition will not be released as a standalone game. Instead, it will come out on PC as an update to Skyrim Special Edition and thus replace the older version. This is despite the fact that we will still have to pay extra to get access to all the new features, including the aforementioned adventures following on Morrowind and Oblivion.

Therefore, while there is still time, we encourage you to use the following short guide, which will enable you to continue playing with mods even after the release of the Anniversary Edition.

How to protect yourself from modding armageddon?

If you play with mods for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition there are two things you can do to make sure you'll be able to use them after the Anniversary Edition is released.

First, in the Steam client, go to the game's properties. In the "Updates" section of the "Automatic Updates" drop-down menu, select the "Update this game only on launch" option.

Then just have the Steam client loaded and fire up the game through Skyrim Script Extender or the mod manager. The service will not recognize this as a normal game launch and will not perform the update.

Second, back up your Skyrim files. This will enable you to enjoy Anniversary Edition and then revert back to the old version when you want to play with mods.

We advise backing up the entire game folder, as it is difficult to judge what changes will be made by the update. If you absolutely want to save space on your hard drive, back up at least the following files (which should work make the game work in 99% of cases):

  1. SkyrimSE.exe
  2. Data/Skyrim.esm
  3. Data/Update.esm
  4. Data/Skyrim - Interface.bsa
  5. Data/Skyrim - Misc.bsa
  6. Data/Skyrim - Patch.bsa
