Subnautica Coming to PUBG? Krafton Acquires Unknown Worlds Entertainment

Unknown Worlds Entertainment, known for the game Subnautica, has been acquired by Krafton - the same company that owns the rights to the PUBG brand. This is already the sixth development team belonging to this company. Its owners ensure that the producers will remain independent in creative matters.

Successful independent devteams can be compared to mid-range football clubs - once in a while, you'll find a star player in their ranks. What do they have in common? Eventually the top dog in a given market knocks on the door and makes them an offer they can't refuse.. Such a fate met the devs of Subnautica (and also it's expansion Below Zero, the Natural Selection mod for Half Life 2, its commercial sequel, and Zen of Sudoku), Unknown Worlds Entertainment, which has has been acquired by Krafton, the owner of the rights to PUBG.

Thus, the devs of Subnautica joined such development teams as PUBG Studios, Striking Distance Studios, Bluehole Studio, RisingWings, and Dreamotion. Krafton assures that the devs will remain independent in creative matters so they don't lose their unique identity and develop more "community-driven virtual worlds." And what specifically? We'll probably find out in 2022 when Unknown Worlds Entertainment's next project goes into early access.

After that anything is possible. Who knows, maybe the next Subnautica - or the next addition - will take place in the PUBG universe? While it does sound a bit absurd, one game set in this virtual world has already been announced. We're talking about the science-fiction horror The Callisto Protocol, about which we wrote here. Striking Distance Studios - one of the aforementioned teams that includes the co-devs of the Dead Space series - is responsible for the game, which is set to release in 2022 on PC and consoles.
