Sony Could be Working on PlayStation 3 Emulation for PS5

Rumors have surfaced online that Sony is working on enabling PlayStation 3 games to be emulated on the PlayStation 5 console.

Sony may be working on solutions that would enable PlayStation 5 users to play emulated games from the PS3.

  1. The source of this information is usually very knowledgeable journalist Jeff Grubb from Venture Beat.
  2. We shouldn't expect any quick announcements, as these solutions will still take a long time to develop.
  3. The reason for the problems is the PS3's highly unusual architecture, which makes emulation difficult.

Recall that a few days ago Sony announced a new version of the PS Plus service, designed to better compete with Game Pass. The most expensive variant, PlayStation Plus Premium, will offer access to classic games from PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP. The problem is that in the case of PlayStation 3 will only be possible to play via streaming.

The lack of PS3 emulation has proven to be a big disappointment for many people. One of the developers working for NightDiveStudios (company specializing in refreshing old games) stated that the emulation of PlayStation 3 on the PS5 is possible, and Sony is simply not interested in spending millions of dollars to develop this technology.

It's hard not to agree with this assessment. Fans without any financial support are able to create decent PS3 emulators on PC, the best example of which is the open-source project RPCS3, so Sony shouldn't have significant problems with it, goven its resources and better knowledge of the console.
