In July, we learned about the takeover of Techland by Tencent, but we did not know the amount that the Chinese giant had to pay to become the majority shareholder in the company. It turns out that it was the largest transaction in Poland in 2023.

  1. As we can read in a report prepared by Navigator Capital and Fordata, Techland was acquired for approximately $1,6 billion.
  2. In total, the Shenzhen giant purchased 67% of Techland's shares. Despite Tencent's majority stake, the Polish developer is to maintain creative independence and control over its brands.
  3. Let us recall that this Chinese company also invested in several smaller Polish development studios (including 1C Entertainment or The Parasight). In addition, it owns a 22% stake in another Polish studio, Bloober Team. This team is currently working on a remake of Silent Hill 2, which, according to Sony, will debut this year.

The first months after the transaction were not easy for Techland. After the implementation of microtransactions in Dying Light 2, many players were very critical of the studio's recent business decisions, directly describing its actions as "selling its soul to the devil."

Let's hope, however, that this collaboration will have a positive impact on Techland's future projects. We know that a new action RPG is in development, which is "taking shape," according to the studio's president, Pawel Marchewka.

  1. Techland has come under the wing of a giant; we explain what league the Chinese Tencent is playing in.
