Philipp Weber, the narrative director of The Witcher 4, admitted that for a long time, he didn't know whether the CD Projekt Red studio would be able to top the third installment. Ultimately, however, he found such thinking to be wrong and pointed to a priority of greater importance.
CD Projekt Red is definitely under a lot of pressure to make sure that the upcoming game, The Witcher 4, is at least as good as, if not better than, the third installment of the series, which was a huge hit worldwide. Philipp Weber, the narrative director of the fourth part, presented his point of view on this issue in an interview for GamesRadar+.
The community is wondering how the developers from the Polish studio will make Ciri's adventures better than Geralt's in "The Witcher 3." Weber and the team were aware of the players' expectations and asked themselves, "How are we going to do this?"
After some time, however, the director came to the conclusion that games cannot be perceived so "mathematically." According to Weber, the recognition that The Witcher 3 enjoys among many players is very subjective, so it's not worth thinking about a continuation as a better or equal production.
This means that for each player, a different installment of The Witcher may be the best one. Even though most fans consider it to be "3," Weber himself would point to the first installment. The same is expected with The Witcher 4 - the upcoming installment of the series will be even better than the 2015 game for some, and much worse for others.
At the same time, the director assured that when developing the sequel with Ciri in the lead role, the creators want to maintain the philosophy that accompanied them while working on creating "the third installment."
I think the way we want to do justice to the legacy of The Witcher 3 is to take the philosophy we had during The Witcher 3 - how to make a game, how to really care about these things, how to tell stories - and keep that philosophy. At the same time, there are new questions we want to answer, because this is supposed to feel like a true sequel, not just redoing what we did before. And I think it's really trying to have that healthy mix of really moving forward and also trying out some new things, but doing justice to what was there, not trying to beat it.
The Witcher 4 is set to be released no earlier than 2027. The title will hit PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
